Chapter 10 - Home

One year later.

The morning sun rose bright and golden over the Charlotte skyline, burning away the gentle mist hanging over the park next to the Riverglass Residences.

Where an ugly, dusty excavation site had once stood, there was now the Walker Community Center—a brilliant glass-and-timber structure featuring public art studios, a trade training academy for young builders, and a sprawling green park open to every citizen of the city.

In the lobby of the Riverglass tower, the atmosphere was lively and warm. Children laughed as they walked through the front doors with their parents, heading toward the green park next door.

A sleek black car pulled up to the curb.

Caleb Walker stepped out from the driver’s side. He was wearing a simple dark gray Henley shirt, comfortable jeans, and his classic, durable leather boots. They weren't caked in mud today, but they showed the honest wear of a man who still spent his mornings on active job sites.

He walked around to the passenger side and opened the door.

Lauren stepped out, wearing a beautiful cream-colored summer dress, her hair flowing naturally over her shoulders. She held a young boy—their six-month-old son, Leo—gently against her chest.

Caleb smiled warmly, leaning down to kiss Lauren gently on the lips before placing a soft kiss on his son’s tiny forehead.

“How was the site inspection at the new academy?” Lauren asked, smiling up at him as they walked through the grand front doors of the Riverglass Residences.

“Perfect,” Caleb said, taking her hand in his as they crossed the marble floor. “The framing for the new apprentice hall is finished. We open enrollment next month.”

As they walked past the front desk, the young receptionist looked up, smiling brightly.

“Good morning, Mr. and Mrs. Walker!”

“Good morning, Sarah,” Lauren replied warmly, her voice light and full of genuine joy.

They walked toward the grand elevators. As the doors slid open, Caleb stopped for a moment, looking down at his worn leather boots resting against the immaculate marble floor, and then up at the brass plaque on the wall that bore his family’s pledge to the city.

He looked at Lauren, who was watching him with deep, unconditional love in her eyes, holding their son tightly in her arms.

There were no service entrances anymore. No hidden doors, no fake appearances, and no golden cages.

Caleb wrapped his arm around Lauren’s waist, drawing his family close as they stepped into the elevator together, heading up to the home they had built on the strongest foundation of all.
