Chapter 8 - The Reckoning in Courtroom 402

Friday morning arrived under an overcast, iron-grey sky.
When Sarah Miller and I walked through the metal detectors at the county courthouse, Wendy Vance was already seated on the wooden benches outside Courtroom 402.
She looked pristine. She wore a tailored charcoal wool suit, pearls at her throat, and her silver-streaked hair swept back into an immaculate chignon. Luca sat beside her, but he looked like a hollow shell of the man who had walked out of the restaurant five days earlier. His eyes were bloodshot, his hands twitched in his lap, and he wouldn't meet my gaze as I passed.
Behind them sat Aunt Claire, Uncle Robert, and two attorneys from a prestigious downtown corporate firm.
When Judge Alvarez—a formidable, seventy-year-old woman with silver-rimmed glasses and a reputation for tolerating zero nonsense—took the bench, Wendy’s lead counsel, Richard Sterling, stood immediately.
“Your Honor,” Sterling began, his voice smooth and theatrical. “We are here on an emergency basis to protect a vulnerable minor, Fiona Vance. The mother, Jessica Vance, has exhibited severe post-partum instability, culminating in an irrational flight from the family home and the active obstruction of critical developmental therapies recommended by my client, Wendy Vance, a distinguished director of a licensed pediatric behavioral center.”
Judge Alvarez looked over her glasses at Sarah Miller. “Response?”
Sarah stood with effortless grace. “Your Honor, this petition is not an emergency welfare concern. It is a fraudulent retaliation designed to facilitate medical exploitation and financial embezzlement.”
Sterling scoffed loudly. “Absurd! Outrageous theatrics!”
“Is it?” Sarah Miller didn't raise her voice. She stepped forward and handed four thick binders to the bailiff.
“Your Honor, binder Exhibit A contains an authentic audio-video recording from the child’s birthday party on Sunday. In this recording, Luca Vance explicitly instructs Wendy Vance to attack the child’s speech capabilities to ‘knock the mother’s confidence down’ prior to demanding clinical enrollment.”
Wendy stiffened on the bench behind her counsel. Her pearl necklace seemed suddenly tight around her neck.
“Binder Exhibit B,” Sarah continued, “contains the Vance Family Trust addendum, legally tying a hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar payout to Luca Vance contingent upon the minor child being enrolled as an experimental test subject in Wendy Vance’s facility.”
Judge Alvarez opened the binder. The courtroom grew so quiet you could hear the hum of the fluorescent lights overhead. The judge’s eyes narrowed as she read the precise language of the addendum.
“And binder Exhibit C,” Sarah concluded, her voice ringing clear across the mahogany room, “contains three hundred pages of Oakwood Pediatric Behavioral Center’s internal billing audits, provided under whistleblower protection, demonstrating that Wendy Vance has systematically fabricated diagnoses of communication disorders in healthy children to fraudulently secure over two million dollars in state research endowments. The Department of Health and Human Services launched a formal criminal investigation into Oakwood at eight o’clock this morning.”
Wendy Vance gasped—a sharp, strangled inhalation.
She turned to Luca, her hand digging viciously into his arm. “What is this? Luca, what did you do?”
Luca pulled his arm away violently. “Leave me alone, Mom! I told you she had the video! I told you to drop it!”
“Silence in my courtroom!” Judge Alvarez’s gavel came down with the force of a gunshot.
The crack of the wood echoed off the walls.
Judge Alvarez took off her glasses, placed them slowly on her blotter, and stared down at Wendy Vance.
“Mrs. Vance,” the judge said, her voice shaking with quiet fury. “In thirty-two years on this bench, I have rarely seen an abuse of the family court system as cynical, as manipulative, and as morally bankrupt as the petition brought before me today.”
Sterling, Wendy’s high-priced attorney, took a step back from his own client, visibly attempting to detach himself from the wreckage.
“The emergency custody petition is denied with prejudice,” Judge Alvarez commanded. “A temporary restraining order is hereby issued against Wendy Vance, prohibiting any contact, direct or indirect, with the minor Fiona Vance. Furthermore, I am referring the financial documents and medical records presented today directly to the District Attorney’s Special Crimes Division for immediate criminal review.”
The judge looked at Luca Vance.
