Chapter 6 - The Reconciliation Trap

By Wednesday morning, the Vance family group chat had turned into a toxic cesspool of guilt-tripping and performative sorrow.

*Aunt Claire:*

**Jessi, family resolves issues behind closed doors. Sending CPS away when Wendy was only trying to ensure Fiona’s welfare is unconscionable. You need to apologize.**

*Uncle Robert:*

**Luca is beside himself. He hasn’t slept in forty-eight hours. Think about your marriage, Jessica.**

Then, at eleven o'clock, Luca sent a private email to my personal address.

Subject: *Peace / Fiona’s Future*

> *“Jessi,*

> *I admit things got out of hand at the restaurant. Mom’s choice of words was poor, and I was wrong to ask her to bring up the speech concern in public. I was desperate and stressed about our finances.*

>

> *Mom wants to make amends. She has invited us to dinner tomorrow night at her home in Oakridge—just us, my sister, and Uncle Robert. She wants to present you with a revised educational trust for Fiona, with zero clinical requirements attached. No strings. She wants to give Fiona fifty thousand dollars in a locked college account as a formal apology.*

>

> *Please come. For Fiona. Let’s end this war before it destroys our lives.”*

I forwarded the email directly to Sarah Miller.

Within five minutes, my attorney’s name flashed on my screen.

“Don’t go,” Sarah said immediately.

“I know it’s a trap,” I answered. “A fifty-thousand-dollar settlement offer disguised as an apology, designed to get me into an enclosed space where they can pressure me into dropping my separation filings.”

“Worse,” Sarah replied. “My private investigator discovered this morning that Wendy Vance filed an *Ex Parte Emergency Custody Injunction* in family court early today, alleging parental kidnapping and medical neglect. The hearing is scheduled for Friday morning at nine o'clock.”

I gripped the edge of the desk. “She filed for emergency custody while sending me an invitation to a peace dinner?”

“Exactly,” Sarah said, her voice dripping with contempt. “If you had shown up to dinner tomorrow night, she would have had process servers serve you with the emergency petition at her dining table, or worse, used the dinner to record another fabricated confrontation to present to Judge Alvarez on Friday morning.”

“What do we do?”

“We let them think their little ambush is working,” Sarah said with cold precision. “Kelly’s documents arrived an hour ago. The billing fraud at Oakwood is staggering. We have forged physician signatures, fake diagnostic codes, and your husband’s signed financial agreement contingent on Fiona’s enrollment. We don't go to dinner, Jessica. We meet them in Courtroom 402 on Friday.”
