Chapter 9 - The Confession in Blood

The private recovery room at Presbyterian Hospital was silent except for the rhythmic, comforting beep of the heart monitor.

Sunlight poured through the massive bay windows overlooking Central Park. I sat propped up against the pillows, dressed in a soft silk robe, my cuts stitched and bandaged, the swelling on my face already subsiding under the care of the city's finest plastic surgeons.

On the small couch across the room, Sadie was fast asleep, curled under a cashmere blanket, holding her favorite stuffed bear. She had spent the last two hours hugging me, crying with joy, showing me the straight, beautiful braces that were now set on her teeth, before exhaustion finally claimed her.

The door clicked open softly.

Ryan stepped in.

He was dressed in a pristine charcoal suit, but he looked exhausted. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, his jawline covered in dark stubble. He hadn't slept in forty-eight hours.

As soon as he saw that I was awake, the tension in his shoulders dropped. He walked across the room, moving with silent footsteps so as not to wake Sadie, and sat on the edge of my bed.

“How do you feel?” he asked softly, taking my hand and bringing it to his lips, kissing my knuckles with reverent tenderness.

“Much better,” I smiled faintly. “The doctor said the cuts won’t even leave scars. And Sadie... she’s safe, Ryan. That’s all that matters.”

Ryan didn't smile. He looked down at our joined hands, his thumb caressing the back of my wrist where the rope burns were still fading.

“The Council of Families held an emergency tribunal this morning,” Ryan said quietly. “Victor Voss and the Moretti family have been completely dissolved. Their territories were absorbed. The war is over, Diane. There is no one left to threaten you.”

I looked at him, feeling a sudden, cold dread settle in my stomach.

“Then... the ninety days are over?” I whispered. “The contract... is fulfilled?”

Ryan reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper—the original engagement agreement I had signed that night in the Maybach.

Beside it, he placed a black titanium debit card.

“Five million dollars,” Ryan said, his voice strained, cracking with an agonizing restraint. “Untraceable. You can take Sadie anywhere in the world. Paris, London, Tokyo. You can buy a villa in Switzerland, send her to any medical school she dreams of. You will never have to worry about rent, about bullies, or about men with guns ever again.”

My heart felt like it was being ripped into two pieces.

I stared at the money. I stared at the contract. The very thing I had sold my soul for three months ago.

“Is that what you want, Ryan?” I asked, tears burning behind my eyelids. “You want me to take the money and leave?”

Ryan didn't answer immediately. He closed his eyes, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.

“I am a monster, Diane,” he whispered, his voice trembling with a vulnerability that tore at my soul. “Look at what happened to you because of me. You were kidnapped. You were tortured. My world is filled with blood, bullets, and betrayal. You and Sadie deserve sunshine. You deserve safety. If I keep you here, my sins will eventually destroy you.”

He stood up, turning his back to me, preparing to walk out that door forever.

“You coward,” I said.

Ryan froze.

He slowly turned around, shock flashing across his dark eyes. “What did you call me?”

I threw off the hospital blanket, swung my legs over the edge of the bed, and stood up. Despite the dull ache in my ribs, I crossed the room until I was standing inches from him, looking up into his tortured, beautiful face.

“You fought off four syndicates, you survived assassinations, you tore through an army of mercenaries to save my life,” I said, poking his broad chest with my finger, tears spilling over my cheeks. “And now you’re running away because you’re terrified of loving someone?”

Ryan stared at me, speechless.

I reached out, took the contract from his hand, and right in front of his eyes, I tore it in half.

Then I tore it again, letting the white scraps of paper flutter down like confetti onto the hospital floor.

“I don't want your five million dollars, Ryan Greer,” I cried, grabbing the lapels of his suit jacket with both hands. “I don't care about the penthouse, or the emeralds, or your mafia empire! I fell in love with the man who knelt on a dirty linoleum floor in Brooklyn to make my little sister smile! I fell in love with the man who shielded me with his own body in an alleyway!”

Ryan’s breath hitched. His eyes dilated, swirling with raw, overwhelming emotion.

“Diane...”

“I know what your world is,” I whispered fiercely, burying my face against his chest, inhaling the scent of cedarwood and rain that had become my home. “It’s dangerous. It’s terrifying. But the only place in this entire world where I feel safe... is in your arms. Don't you dare send me away.”

For a second, the world stood completely still.

Then, Ryan’s arms snapped around my waist like iron bands. He lifted me off the floor, crushing me against him, and buried his face in my neck, letting out a ragged, broken sob of pure, unadulterated relief.

“I love you,” Ryan vowed against my skin, his voice thick with devotion. “I have loved you from the second you kissed me in that ballroom, Diane Harper. And I will spend every breath I have left protecting you, loving you, and making sure you never shed another tear.”

May you like

He brought his mouth down to mine, tasting of salt, tears, and absolute, eternal surrender.
