Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage & The First Public Test

By six o’clock that evening, I barely recognized the woman staring back at me from the gilded full-length mirror.

A team of stylists, makeup artists, and hair specialists had descended upon my suite like a swarm of elegant locusts. The cheap drugstore mascara and faded floral dresses were gone. In their place stood a vision draped in an emerald-green silk gown with an asymmetrical off-the-shoulder neckline that accentuated my collarbones. The skirt cascaded down like liquid jewel, slit daringly up to the mid-thigh, revealing towering black Louboutin heels.

Around my throat rested a diamond necklace—the Greer family heirloom, worth over two million dollars. Its cold weight was a constant reminder of the leash wrapped around my neck.

A soft knock sounded at the door, and Ryan stepped in.

He stopped dead in his tracks.

For the first time since I met him, Ryan Greer lost his composure. His dark eyes flared with raw, undisguised hunger as they roved down the length of my body, tracing the curves the silk hugged so faithfully. The silence between us stretched, thick with crackling electricity.

“You look...” Ryan began, his voice raspier than usual. He cleared his throat, regaining his mask of iron discipline. “You will do. Marcus has already settled Sadie at the private recovery villa in the Hamptons. Her first dental surgery went flawlessly. She is sleeping peacefully under full guard.”

Relief flooded my chest, softening the terror of the impending evening. “Thank you, Ryan. Truly.”

He walked over to me, picking up a pair of long black satin gloves from the vanity table. Instead of handing them to me, he took my right hand, his fingers warm and calloused against my skin, and slid the glove up my forearm with agonizing slowness.

“Remember the plan,” he murmured, his breath brushing against my ear, making goosebumps erupt beneath my skin. “The Van Doren auction is the gathering ground for the five ruling families. Catherine Voss will be there with her father, Victor. They will try to bait you. They will try to prove you are a fraud.”

“And what should I do?” I whispered, gazing into his smoldering eyes.

“You smile,” Ryan said, slipping the other glove onto my left arm, his thumb caressing the pulse point at my wrist. “You let them speak. And then you let me tear their world apart.”

The Metropolitan Museum of Art had been rented out exclusively for the elite. Flashes from paparazzi cameras exploded like lightning strikes as our black Maybach pulled up to the red carpet.

When Ryan stepped out, the crowd roared. But when he turned and offered his hand to me, helping me onto the carpet, the press went into an absolute frenzy.

“Mr. Greer! Who is she?”

“Is she the mystery woman from the St. Regis gala?”

“Miss! What is your name?”

Ryan ignored them all. He placed his hand firmly against the small of my back, guiding me up the grand steps. The warmth of his palm seeped through the thin silk, anchoring me against the rising tide of panic.

Inside, the grand hall was filled with hundreds of New York’s most dangerous and influential figures. The moment we crossed the threshold, the room went dead silent.

Dozens of eyes locked onto the emerald necklace around my neck. In this world, everyone recognized the Greer family jewels. Wearing them was an unambiguous declaration: I was chosen.

“Look at her,” a voice sneered from the crowd.

Catherine Voss stepped out from a circle of wealthy socialites, flanked by an older, silver-haired man with cold, calculating eyes—her father, Victor Voss. Catherine was wearing a crimson gown, but her face was pale, her eyes burning with pure malice.

“Ryan,” Victor Voss greeted, his voice dripping with false cordiality as he approached us. “We were surprised to hear you’d be bringing a guest. Especially one plucked straight from the catering staff.”

Whispers erupted across the room like wildfire.

“A waitress?”

“Is he serious?”

“Victor is right, look at her hands!”

Catherine stepped forward, a venomous smirk playing on her lips. “Tell me, Diane Harper... did you steal that necklace, or did you earn it on your knees in the pantry? I suppose five thousand dollars wasn’t enough to buy yourself some real class.”

My cheeks burned. Humiliation surged through me, threatening to drag me under. Every instinct screamed at me to run, to hide from the sneers of these aristocrats who had never known a day of hunger in their lives.

But then, Ryan shifted.

He didn’t yell. He didn’t draw a weapon. He merely stepped half an inch forward, shielding half of my body with his broad shoulder. The air in the room plummeted by ten degrees.

“Victor,” Ryan said, his voice a low, terrifying growl that resonated off the vaulted stone ceiling. “Three hours ago, your subsidiary in Rotterdam lost its shipping license. Two hours ago, your private bank in Zurich froze your personal liquidity. Do you know why?”

Victor Voss’s smug smile instantly vanished. Color drained from his weathered face. “What did you do?”

“I warned you,” Ryan said, stepping directly into Victor’s personal space, towering over the older mafia boss like an executioner over a condemned man. “I warned you that if Catherine ever breathed the same air as my woman again, I would dismantle your empire brick by brick.”

Catherine gasped, grabbing her father’s arm. “Dad, he’s bluffing!”

“I never bluff,” Ryan whispered. He turned his chilling gaze onto Catherine, who visibly flinched under his glare. “You offered five thousand dollars for a kiss, Miss Voss. Allow me to offer fifty million to the man who brings me your family’s signed surrender by midnight.”

Panic broke out among the Voss entourage. Victor’s phone began vibrating frantically in his breast pocket. He pulled it out, stared at the screen with mounting horror, and looked up at Ryan as if seeing a demon.

“Greer... wait. We can talk about this!” Victor stammered, sweat breaking out on his forehead.

“The time for talking ended when your daughter insulted the future Mrs. Greer,” Ryan announced coldly, loud enough for every syndicate leader in the room to hear.

Then, Ryan turned back to me. In front of the entire underworld elite, in front of the flashing cameras and the trembling Voss family, Ryan wrapped his arm around my waist, pulled me flush against his hard chest, and captured my mouth in a deep, possessive, breathtaking kiss.

This wasn’t the hesitant, fearful kiss from the night before.

This was fire. This was ownership. His lips parted mine with demanding passion, tasting of vintage wine and raw power. My hands instinctively clutched his lapels, my head spinning as the rest of the world dissolved into darkness.

When he finally pulled away, his dark eyes were blazing with an intensity that terrified me to the core.

“Remember who you belong to, Diane,” he murmured against my swollen lips, his thumb brushing my chin.

And for the first time, as the room watched in stunned silence, I realized the terrifying truth: the danger wasn't just the enemies surrounding us.

May you like

The greatest danger was that I was beginning to want to belong to him.
