Chapter 4 - The Iron Fortress
The gunshot rolled across the Moretti estate like a sudden crack of thunder.
Rex darted through the door behind Dante, his hackles raised, teeth bared in a vicious snarl toward the long driveway. Dante slammed the reinforced steel door shut, engaging three electronic deadbolts that engaged with heavy hydraulic thuds.
"Down on the floor! In the pantry, now!" Dante commanded.
Anna grabbed Sophie, pulling the little girl tightly against her chest as she dropped behind the marble kitchen island. Sophie’s eyes were huge, but she didn't cry; she clutched Mr. Buttons so hard her knuckles turned white, sensing the sudden, terrifying shift in the air.
Dante unholstered the Kimber .45 from beneath his tailored jacket, thumbing the safety off with a practiced flick. He unclipped his radio.
"Nick! Report!"
Static hissed, followed by the rapid, rhythmic chatter of automatic gunfire over the comms.
*“They rammed the north gate with an armored delivery truck, Boss!”* Nick Romano’s voice cut through the gunfire. *“Six men on foot, heavy body armor, automatic rifles! We dropped two at the perimeter, but four are pushing toward the courtyard! They aren't trying to breach the house—they're trying to set up a perimeter around the east wing!”*
"They want the girl," Dante said through gritted teeth. "Gordon, where are you?"
*“South compound, Boss,”* Gordon replied, his voice calm despite the sirens beginning to wail across the grounds. *“Luke is secure in the sub-level. I’ve armed the four men stationed here. We’re moving through the underground tunnel to flank them from the garden.”*
"Do not let them reach the terrace," Dante ordered. "Shoot on sight."
Dante turned to Anna. She was trembling violently, her forehead pressed against Sophie’s hair, whispering desperate prayers into the child’s curls.
Dante knelt beside them. He reached out, his gloved hand cupping the side of Anna’s face. The touch was steady, an anchor in the hurricane.
"Anna. Look at me."
She looked up, her hazel eyes swimming with sheer panic.
"I need you to take Sophie into the wine cellar through the kitchen floor hatch," Dante said, his voice calm, measured, and absolute. "There is a reinforced panic room behind the third rack on the left. The code is 0-9-1-2. It has independent air filtration, satellite communication, and enough steel to withstand an artillery shell."
"What about you?" Anna’s voice shook. "Dante, there are four men out there!"
"This is my home," Dante replied, his eyes narrowing into cold slits of amber fire. "Nobody comes into my home to hurt what is under my roof."
"Mr. Dante?" Sophie’s small voice squeaked from beneath Anna’s arm.
Dante looked down at the little girl. He leaned in, tapping Mr. Buttons on the nose. "Keep your magic soldier close, Sophie. Rex is going with you. Rex, guard."
The Malinois immediately shifted, placing his massive body between Anna and the kitchen entrance, his ears flat, a low rumble vibrating in his throat. Rex knew his duty.
Dante pulled the brass ring on the floor behind the refrigerator, revealing the hidden hydraulic hatch leading down into the reinforced bunker. He helped Anna down the steel steps, placing Sophie safely in her arms.
"Lock it from the inside," Dante said. "Do not open it until you hear my voice."
"Dante," Anna whispered, her fingers brushing against his sleeve. "Please. Come back."
"Always," he said, and closed the hatch.
The heavy steel seal locked with an airtight hiss.
The moment the civilians were secure, Dante’s demeanor shifted entirely. The lingering warmth of the morning vanished, replaced by the lethal, calculating efficiency that had kept the Moretti family at the apex of the Chicago underworld for three generations.
He moved silently across the kitchen to the gun locker hidden behind the decorative oak paneling. He punched in an eight-digit code. The panel slid open, revealing an array of tactical equipment. Dante traded his .45 for a suppressed Benelli M4 tactical shotgun and grabbed three flashbang grenades from the rack.
A heavy crash sounded from the formal drawing room down the hall. Glass shattered. The front French doors had been breached.
Dante didn't hurry. He moved like smoke, his black dress shoes making no sound against the polished floor.
He reached the arched entrance to the grand foyer. Peering around the marble molding, he saw two men in black tactical gear, Kevlar vests bearing no insignia, advancing in a standard two-man stack. They carried suppressed MPX submachine guns, sweeping their barrels systematically across the grand staircase.
"Clear left," one whispered in a gravelly voice.
"Move to the staff quarters," the other replied. "The boss said the woman and the kid are in the back."
*Victor Kane’s cleanup crew,* Dante thought. *They didn't just come for the memory card. They came to wipe out every trace of Marcus Carter's bloodline.*
Dante pulled the pin on a flashbang with his teeth, counted two seconds, and rolled it across the marble floor.
The cylinder bounced against the base of the grand piano.
"Grenade—!"
*BANG.*
A blinding white flash tore through the foyer, accompanied by a concussive shockwave of 170 decibels that shattered the remaining decorative mirrors. The two mercenaries stumbled, clutching their ears, their vision seared white.
Dante stepped out from the archway.
*BOOM.*
The Benelli roared once. The first operative was lifted off his feet by a twelve-gauge slug to the chest plate, hitting the marble with enough force to crack the stone.
Before the second man could swing his weapon, Dante closed the distance, grabbed the barrel of the MPX, shoved it upward, and drove the butt of his shotgun into the man’s tactical helmet. The mercenary staggered back, blood spurting from his broken nose. Dante spun him around, sweeping his legs out from under him, driving his knee into the man's throat until the struggle ceased.
The foyer fell dead silent, save for the hum of the air conditioner and the smell of cordite.
Dante picked up the fallen man’s radio, which was squawking with frantic static.
*“Team One, report! Did you secure the package? Team One!”*
Dante pressed the talk button. His voice was as cold as a Midwestern blizzard.
"Victor."
The radio went completely quiet for three long seconds. Then, a dry, raspy laugh crackled through the speaker.
*“Dante. I must admit, I expected your little brother to handle this more quietly. He really is useless, isn't he?”*
"Luke is alive," Dante said, staring down at the unconscious mercenary. "And you just committed suicide."
*“Did I?”* Kane’s voice turned vicious, the casual facade peeling away. *“You have a drive that belongs to me, Dante. Marcus Carter stole eighteen million dollars of my offshore routing data before I put him in the river. You give me that drive, and you give me Carter’s little bitch and her brat, and maybe I let you keep your southside territory.”*
"Listen to me very carefully, Kane," Dante said, his voice dropping an octave, carrying the weight of a death sentence. "You touched my family through Luke. You murdered an innocent man who worked under my flag. And now you sent killers into the house where a five-year-old child sleeps."
Dante racked another shell into the chamber of the shotgun with a loud, metallic snap.
"I’m not trading anything with you. I am going to dismantle your business brick by brick. I am going to empty your bank accounts. And then I am going to look into your eyes while you bleed out on your own floor."
*“You think you can take my empire alone, Moretti?”* Kane snarled. *“The Commission won't back you! If you start a war over an accountant's widow, the other four families will put you in the ground!”*
May you like
"Let them try," Dante said, and crushed the radio beneath the heel of his boot.
