Chapter 4 - The Shadow Partner’s Secret

By three o'clock that afternoon, the temperature in Columbus had dropped twenty degrees, a freezing October rain lashing against the windows of the hotel suite.

Judge Gallagher had granted the preliminary injunction without hesitation. Daniel’s corporate debit cards had been declined at lunch; his lease on his company Mercedes was subject to an immediate repossession hold due to fraudulent credit application data; and the locks on the Short North penthouse had been changed by court-appointed receivers.

Then, my personal phone rang from an unknown number with an Illinois area code.

I looked at Nathan. He nodded toward the speaker.

"Laura?"

The voice was thin, breathless, and trembling. It wasn't Daniel.

It was Melissa.

"Melissa," I said. "Nathan Vance is in the room. If this is about the litigation, you need to contact your own counsel."

"Wait! Please, Laura, don't hang up!" Melissa sobbed, the polished, untouchable corporate consultant completely stripped away. "I don't have counsel! The lawyer Daniel hired told me this morning that he can only represent the firm, not me personally! He said I have personal civil and criminal liability!"

"You do," Nathan interjected bluntly. "Conspiracy to commit wire fraud carries up to twenty years in a federal penitentiary, Ms. Reyes. If you’re calling to negotiate, you’re talking to the wrong party."

"I didn't know about the forgery!" Melissa cried, her voice cracking over the line. "I swear to God, Laura, I didn't know! Daniel told me the eighty-five thousand was his personal bonus from a private real estate sale before we met! He told me you were an invalid who couldn't handle legal documents!"

"An invalid?" I repeated, a bitter laugh escaping my throat. "Is that what he told you while you were spending my father's money on your credit card balance?"

"He said it was an advance on my equity!" Melissa wailed. "Laura, please. Meet me. Ten minutes. I’m at the Starbucks on Front Street across from the courthouse. If you come alone—or with Nathan—I will give you Daniel’s secondary laptop. The one he keeps in the floorboard safe under his desk."

Nathan’s eyebrows shot up. Maya stopped typing.

"Why would you do that, Melissa?" I asked. "You were more than happy to mock my fertility loss in front of thirty people twelve hours ago."

"Because he’s going to pin the whole thing on me!" she shrieked. "He spent the last four hours drafting an affidavit claiming that I was the managing partner who controlled the bank tokens! He’s telling the prosecutor that I seduced him and embezzled the funds behind his back! He’s throwing me under the bus, Laura! Just like he threw you under the bus last night!"

I looked at Nathan. The old attorney tapped his chin with his index finger, then slowly nodded.

"Starbucks on Front Street," I told her. "Ten minutes. If you try to run, Nathan has a federal marshal waiting to serve a bench warrant."

"I won't run," she whispered. "I have nowhere to go."

When we arrived at the coffee shop, the rain had turned into a slushy sleet. Melissa was sitting in the corner booth, hunched over a paper cup, wearing an oversized trench coat with the collar turned up. Her eyes were red-rimmed and swollen; her expensive foundation was streaked with salt.

She pushed a black microfiber sleeve across the table. Inside was a sleek silver Lenovo laptop and a leather-bound journal.

"What is this?" Nathan asked, not touching the items, maintaining the chain of custody.

"It’s Daniel’s shadow ledger," Melissa whispered, her hands shaking so violently she had to interlock her fingers to keep them still. "He didn't just steal your eighty-five thousand, Laura. He’s been taking kickbacks from sub-tier IT contractors for four years. He has an account in the Cayman Islands registered under his brother Tom’s name."

I froze. "Tom?"

"Tom was the bagman," Melissa said, tears spilling over her mascara. "Every time Daniel got a contract with the state, Tom billed Mitchell Advisory Group for 'consulting services' through a shell company called Buckeye Strategic Solutions. Tom kicked back sixty percent of the cash to Daniel in bearer bonds and gold bullion stored in a safety deposit box at Fifth Third Bank."

The magnitude of the corruption was staggering. My husband hadn't just been a petty suburban cheat; he had constructed an entire parasitic empire of deceit, using his sycophantic family as conduits while treating me like a naive, anxious houseplant he could water with lies.

"Why give this to us?" I asked, looking her dead in the eye. "What do you want?"

"Immunity," Melissa choked out. "Nathan... your cousin is the assistant district attorney in Franklin County. I know who you are. If I turn state's evidence against Daniel and Tom, I want full immunity from criminal prosecution. I’ll forfeit the condo. I’ll forfeit every dollar Daniel gave me. I just can't go to prison, Laura. Please. I have an eight-year-old daughter in Chicago."

I looked at the woman who had smirked as Daniel insulted my deepest trauma twelve hours earlier. She wasn't a corporate mastermind. She was just another disposable pawn in Daniel’s lifelong game of predatory vanity.

"Give Nathan the passwords," I said coldly. "And then pray the judge is having a good day."
