Chapter 21 - The Trial of Two Mothers

Victoria Vance suddenly stood up, shoving her lead attorney aside with such force that his briefcase crashed to the floor. The cool, aristocratic mask had finally slipped, revealing the rabid predator beneath.

“Enough of this circus!” Victoria snarled, her voice cutting through the microphone. “You listen to the pathetic ramblings of a bankrupt socialite? I built the offshore networks that kept this bank alive during three global recessions! I am the bloodline! David was a weak, sniveling clerk who ran away to grow corn in America because he couldn't stomach the price of power!”

She turned on me, taking two aggressive steps toward my podium before the Swiss bailiffs raised their batons, stopping her in her tracks.

“You are my daughter, Claire!” Victoria hissed, her voice vibrating with venomous possessiveness. “Every drop of cunning in you belongs to me! You think that pathetic American woman Eleanor was your mother? She scrubbed floors! She clipped grocery coupons! She died with nothing while I built an empire!”

The courtroom fell dead silent.

I stood tall, looking down at her from the raised podium. The fury that had burned inside me for months—since the night Evelyn poured wine on my father’s head—suddenly transformed into absolute, tranquil clarity.

“Eleanor Montague gave me something you will never understand, Victoria,” I said, my voice quiet, steady, and devastatingly clear. “She gave me love that required no transaction. She taught me that loyalty cannot be bought, and that dignity cannot be stripped away by monsters who wear diamonds.”

I reached into my pocket, pulled out the worn silver locket, and opened it before the magistrate.

“This is Eleanor Montague,” I announced to the court and to the world. “She raised me. She loved me. She died holding my father’s hand with a clean conscience. You, Victoria, are nothing more than a biological accident. You are an empty vault pretending to be a human being.”

Judge Meyer looked between us for a long, heavy moment. He exchanged quiet words with the other magistrates, then picked up his pen and signed the central docket.

“By the sovereign power vested in this tribunal by the Swiss Confederation,” Judge Meyer announced, his voice ringing like a funeral knell for the House of Vance, “the claims of Victoria Vance are hereby dismissed with prejudice. All assets, voting proxies, and sovereign vaults of the Montague-Vance Bank are declared the sole, indivisible property of Claire Montague.”

He struck the gavel down.

“Furthermore,” the judge added, looking at the federal prosecutor sitting in the front row, “based on the witness testimony and newly unsealed ledgers, I issue an immediate federal arrest warrant for Victoria Vance on charges of high treason, racketeering, and corporate conspiracy.”
