Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Hayes

At 8:00 a.m. the following morning, the prestigious law firm of *Bannister, Cole & Croft* in downtown Tysons Corner was operating as usual. Parquet floors gleamed under modern lighting; paralegals rushed between conference rooms with stacks of briefs.

Carter Hayes was a junior partner at the firm—a position his uncle Frank had secured for him through political back-scratching and pressure on the managing partners.

At 8:15 a.m., the firm’s managing partner, Harrison Cole, received a courier envelope marked with the red seal of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Inside was not a lawsuit.

It was an unedited video file on an encrypted thumb drive, accompanied by a letter signed personally by the Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit and the Virginia State Bar Disciplinary Board.

Harrison Cole plugged the drive into his desktop terminal.

By 8:20 a.m., every senior partner in the firm was gathered around Cole's screen, watching in horrified, nauseated silence as Carter Hayes struck his heavily pregnant wife, shattered her phone, and stood over her while she bled onto the floor.

"My God," one senior partner gasped, covering her mouth. "He's an animal."

"Call security," Harrison Cole said, his face white with rage and panic. "I want his office cleared out in thirty minutes. Change the access codes to the building. Freeze his firm accounts. If a single client finds out this monster represents our brand, we will be destroyed by noon."

"What about Frank Hayes?" another partner whispered. "Frank won't like this."

Cole looked at the partner with utter contempt. "Have you checked the morning news? Frank Hayes was suspended thirty minutes ago by the State Attorney General pending an emergency federal corruption probe. The Hayes family is dead. Burn everything associated with Carter Hayes before we catch fire too."

Meanwhile, at the Belle Haven Country Club in Alexandria, Eleanor Hayes was sitting on the terrace, attempting to maintain her routine.

She had posted a $5,000 unsecured bond through a local bail bondsman at dawn, having been charged only as a misdemeanor accessory during the initial booking. Her high-priced defense attorney had assured her that the charges against an older, respectable socialite would be dismissed quietly once Frank pulled a few strings.

Eleanor adjusted her oversized sunglasses and ordered a mimosa from the young waiter.

"And make sure the orange juice is freshly squeezed this time," she snapped. "I won't tolerate the swill you served last week."

The waiter didn't move. He stood looking down at her, his expression a mixture of disgust and cold pity.

"Excuse me?" Eleanor bristled, lowering her glasses. "Are you deaf? I gave you an order."

"Mrs. Hayes," a stern voice interrupted.

Eleanor turned to see Arthur Vance, the president of the country club's board of directors, flanked by two private security officers.

"Arthur, darling!" Eleanor smiled, though it looked strained. "Thank goodness you’re here. The staff this morning is utterly incompetent—"

"Eleanor," Arthur said, cutting her off with a voice like dry leaves. "You need to surrender your membership card and leave the property immediately."

Eleanor froze, the mimosa glass trembling in her manicured hand. "I... I beg your pardon? My late husband was a founding trustee of this club! I have held a gold tier membership for twenty-four years!"

Arthur leaned down, his eyes cold and hard. "Twenty minutes ago, an anonymous donor sent a video clip to every single member of the board. We watched you push your pregnant daughter-in-law into a kitchen island, Eleanor. We watched you insult her while she begged for an ambulance."

The terrace went completely dead silent.

Several women sitting at adjacent tables—women Eleanor had played bridge with for two decades—turned their chairs away in open revulsion.

"That... that was a private family matter taken out of context!" Eleanor sputtered, her face turning crimson with humiliation. "The girl was hysterical! She attacked me first! I was merely defending myself!"

"The video has audio, Eleanor," Arthur said flatly. "You called her a freeloading bitch and told your son to let her lose the baby. The board held an emergency session via video call ten minutes ago. Your membership is revoked with cause. You are officially trespassed from this property. If you step foot on this lawn again, you will be arrested."

"You can't do this to me!" Eleanor shrieked, jumping to her feet, knocking her mimosa over. The orange liquid spilled across the white linen tablecloth, dripping onto her expensive beige linen pants. "I am Eleanor Hayes! I built this town!"

"Escort her off the premises," Arthur ordered the guards without a second glance.

May you like

Two large security officers took Eleanor firmly by the elbows, lifting her bodily away from the table as the entire terrace watched her being dragged across the manicured lawn toward the parking lot, screaming curses like a lunatic in broad daylight.
