Chapter 9 - The Uninvited Guest

The pressure was mounting like a pressure cooker ready to blow.

On Wednesday morning, Jason and Arthur met with a handwriting analyst and a criminal defense attorney to officially file charges of document forgery against the loan application. It was the only legal recourse to stop Sterling, but it came with a devastating price: filing the police report meant Carol would face formal criminal charges.

I was in the kitchen preparing lunch for Lily when the front doorbell rang.

Not a polite tap, but three heavy, impatient thumps against the wood.

Daniel wasn't home; he had gone to Jason's clinic to help audit their business accounts. Arthur and Jason were still with the detectives. It was just me, Lily upstairs, and Carol sitting silently in the sunroom.

I peered through the living room window. A man in his late fifties stood on the porch, wearing a tailored charcoal overcoat and leather gloves. His silver hair was slicked back, and his features were sharp, calculating, and cold.

Richard Sterling.

My pulse surged, but I refused to let fear take the wheel. I locked the deadbolt, cracked the heavy front door open on its brass security chain, and looked him in the eye.

"Can I help you?" I asked, my voice devoid of warmth.

"Emma Vance," Sterling said, offering a tight, humorless smile. "Or is it Miller now? You look very much like your mother when she was younger. Much more sensible, I hope."

"You are trespassing on private property, Mr. Sterling. State your business or I call the sheriff."

Sterling chuckled softly, pulling a leather wallet from his pocket and sliding a certified business card through the crack in the door. "The sheriff won't help you with a valid civil lien, my dear. I’m here out of courtesy. I understand your family is attempting to file a fraud claim regarding the loan guarantee."

"It's not an attempt. It's a fact. I never signed that document. Neither did Jason."

Sterling leaned in slightly, his smile vanishing. "Perhaps you didn't. But do you know what a criminal investigation into your mother will uncover, Emma? It won't just stop at my loan. It will open every commercial grant she received from the state over the last ten years. Grants that were deposited into accounts where your father’s name is listed as a primary holder. If Carol goes down for financial fraud, Arthur goes to prison as a co-conspirator."

The air left my lungs.

"You're lying," I whispered, though cold dread began pooling in my gut.

"Am I?" Sterling asked smoothly. "Ask your father who signed the annual grant certifications for the Department of Agriculture while he was still a state employee. Carol was sloppy, Emma. But she dragged Arthur into the mud with her. If you press charges to save your credit, your father spends his golden years in a state penitentiary."

From behind me, a soft gasp broke the silence.

I turned. Carol was standing in the hallway, clutching the banister, her face white as snow. She had heard every single word.
