Chapter 2 - THE MAN THEY NEVER KNEW

By midnight, every major financial news channel was reporting the same headline.

WHITMORE HOLDINGS FACES MASSIVE FINANCIAL FREEZE.

By 1:00 a.m., the number had become three headlines.

BANKS SUSPEND WHITMORE CREDIT.

REGULATORS INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE FRAUD.

MYSTERY INVESTOR TRIGGERS COLLAPSE OF BILLION-DOLLAR EMPIRE.

The mystery investor wasn't a mystery to me.

But the Whitmores still had no idea.

At 2:17 a.m., Rebecca called.

“Daniel, we have a problem.”

I was sitting beside my mother in our old house.

She had changed into dry clothes and fallen asleep on the couch.

“What kind of problem?”

“Someone accessed the Northbridge archive.”

I stood.

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

I looked toward the hallway.

“Is anything missing?”

“One file.”

My stomach tightened.

“Which one?”

“Your father's original acquisition records.”

I didn't speak.

Rebecca continued.

“Daniel, there's more.”

“What?”

“The person who accessed the archive used Charles Whitmore's private security credentials.”

I looked at my mother.

She was asleep.

“Keep the file protected.”

“I already moved everything.”

“Good.”

“Daniel…”

“What?”

“Are you sure your mother knows the entire story?”

I stared at the sleeping woman.

“No.”

Rebecca sighed.

“Maybe it's time she does.”

I ended the call.

Twenty minutes later, someone knocked on the front door.

I froze.

Nobody knew where we were.

I opened the door.

An elderly man stood outside.

He wore a dark overcoat and held an old leather briefcase.

“Daniel Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Thomas Hale.”

I recognized him immediately.

My father's former chief financial officer.

Everyone believed Thomas had died years ago.

He stepped inside.

“I've been waiting twenty-two years to tell you the truth.”

My mother woke up.

She stared at him.

“Thomas?”

He nodded.

Her face drained of color.

“You're alive.”

“I am.”

She stood slowly.

“Why?”

Thomas placed the briefcase on the table.

“Because your husband saved my life.”

My mother sat down.

I opened the briefcase.

Inside were photographs.

Contracts.

Bank transfers.

And a handwritten letter.

My father's handwriting.

I knew it instantly.

I unfolded the letter.

Eleanor,

If you are reading this, then Thomas finally came back.

I need you to know something.

I didn't lose the company.

I gave it away.

I gave it to Daniel.

My hands began shaking.

I read the next line.

One day, Charles Whitmore will come for everything.

I looked up.

“Mom?”

She was crying.

“What did Dad know?”

She wiped her face.

“I thought he was paranoid.”

Thomas shook his head.

“He wasn't.”

He opened another folder.

“Charles Whitmore didn't build his empire.”

He looked directly at me.

“He built it on your father's stolen assets.”

I stared at the documents.

Twenty-two years ago, my father had discovered that Charles was manipulating a joint venture.

He confronted him.

Charles responded by secretly buying the company's creditors.

Then he forced my father into bankruptcy.

Except my father had already anticipated it.

Before the collapse, he transferred the company's most valuable assets into a private trust.

The beneficiary?

Me.

Daniel Mercer.

I had inherited the foundation of Northbridge Capital when I was nine years old.

But because I was a child, my mother became trustee.

For years, we lived quietly.

No mansion.

No luxury cars.

No public appearances.

My mother wanted me to grow up without becoming obsessed with money.

So I became an ordinary consultant.

At least, that was what the world believed.

But I had spent the last five years rebuilding Northbridge.

And two years ago, I deliberately entered Whitmore Holdings as an outside consultant.

I wanted to understand Charles from the inside.

I wanted evidence.

Not revenge.

Evidence.

Thomas looked at me.

“You finally have it.”

I looked at the documents.

Then at my mother.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

She cried harder.

“Because your father made me promise.”

“What promise?”

“That you would never become like Charles.”

I knelt beside her.

“Mom, I'm not doing this because I want his empire.”

She touched my face.

“Then why?”

I looked toward the window.

“Because he destroyed Dad's life.”

I paused.

“And tonight he tried to destroy yours.”

Thomas quietly closed the briefcase.

“There is one more thing.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

He took out a small envelope.

“Your father left this for you.”

My name was written on it.

Daniel.

I opened it.

There were only six words.

Don't destroy them. Expose them.

May you like

I smiled sadly.

“Dad knew me too well.”
