Chapter 8 - Morning Light and Golden Chains

The dawn broke in pale gold hues over the shattered city skyline.
I woke up curled in the center of an enormous California king bed, swathed in Egyptian cotton sheets that smelled distinctly of sandalwood, rain, and Roman.
I sat up abruptly, clutching the duvet to my chest. For a fleeting second, I hoped the entire night had been a vivid, terrifying nightmare. But the sharp smell of ozone in the air, the pristine silk robe draped over the foot of the bed, and the heavy security presence visible outside the glass patio instantly grounded me in reality.
The bedroom door opened silently.
Roman walked in, freshly showered, wearing a crisp charcoal three-piece suit without a single crease. He had a bandage taped securely over his arm, hidden beneath the tailored sleeve. In his hand, he carried a silver platter holding a pot of steaming coffee, fresh croissants, and sliced fruit.
"I promised I'd be back for breakfast," Roman said, a faint, rare smile playing on his chiseled lips as he set the tray down on the nightstand.
"You actually made breakfast?" I blinked, utterly bewildered.
"My personal chef made it," Roman corrected smoothly, pouring a cup of dark coffee and handing it to me. "I merely demanded he not burn the pastries. Drink. You need your strength."
I took the warm porcelain cup, savoring the rich aroma before taking a sip. "Roman... what happens now? Can I go home? My shift at the diner starts at eleven."
Roman took a seat in the velvet armchair beside the bed, crossing one long leg over the other. The warmth in his expression vanished, replaced by the calculating coldness of a king laying out terms of surrender.
"You don't have an apartment anymore, Elena."
My heart dropped into my stomach. "What?"
"Petrov’s men firebombed your building at four this morning," Roman said evenly. "They found it empty, of course. Viktor’s men evacuated your neighbors hours earlier. But your life as a civilian is officially terminated."
Tears pricked my eyes, anger suddenly surging past my fear. "You can't just dictate my life! I didn't ask for any of this! I don't belong in your world of blood and guns!"
Roman leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his piercing gray eyes pinning me to the mattress.
"You called me into your life, Elena. Accident or destiny, the entire underworld now knows your name. If you walk out those doors alone, Petrov will skin you alive to spite me. The Italian syndicate will kidnap you for ransom. You are the only person who has ever breached Roman Vane's inner sanctum and walked out breathing."
He reached out, his hand wrapping gently around the back of my neck, pulling me forward until our faces were inches apart.
May you like
"You stay by my side. You wear my crest. And in return, I make you untouchable."
