Chapter 8 - Breaking the Syndicate
Three days later, the board room of Duca Enterprises on the fifty-fourth floor of the Manhattan tower was an icebox.
The twelve members of the executive committee sat in their high-backed leather chairs, their faces pale, their eyes fixed on the empty chair at the head of the long glass conference table.
Julian Duca’s arrest had sent shockwaves through Wall Street. The stock of Duca Pharma had plunged forty percent in seventy-two hours before trading was halted by the SEC. Rumors of money laundering, black-market biotechnology sales, and corporate homicide were splashing across the front page of every major newspaper in the world.
At precisely ten o’clock, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Matteo Duca walked in.
He wore an immaculate charcoal three-piece bespoke suit. His posture was commanding, his jaw clean-shaven, his dark eyes burning with absolute, lethal authority.
He did not walk alone.
To his right walked Mara, carrying a thick leather briefcase containing the forensic financial audit.
To his left, walking with steady, elegant grace, her head held high and her dark eyes sweeping the room with cool intelligence, was Elena Duca.
The gasp that ran through the boardroom was audible. Three elderly directors actually pushed their chairs back from the table, their hands shaking as if they were looking at an apparition rising from the underworld.
“Elena?” whispered Marcus Vance, Julian’s chief financial officer and a distant cousin of the disgraced physician. “That... that is legally impossible. The death certificate—”
“The death certificate has been rescinded by the New York State Supreme Court as of eight o’clock this morning,” Matteo said, his voice ringing through the room with the force of an iron gavel.
Matteo pulled out the heavy leather chair at the head of the table and held it open. Elena sat down, resting her hands calmly on the polished glass. Matteo remained standing behind her, his hand resting securely on the back of her chair.
“As of this moment,” Matteo declared, “the restructuring of Duca Pharmaceuticals is complete. Julian Duca has surrendered all equity, voting stock, and administrative control as part of his plea arrangement with the Department of Justice to avoid capital murder charges.”
He leaned forward, his knuckles resting on the table, fixing each board member with a gaze that felt like a death sentence.
“Julian did not act alone,” Matteo said softly. “The VX-9 compound could not have been manufactured without the authorization of the secondary logistics committee. Two members of this board signed off on the diversion of chemical precursors from our plant in New Jersey.”
Marcus Vance’s face turned gray. He began to reach for his briefcase.
“Don't bother, Marcus,” Mara said calmly from the doorway. “Two postal inspectors and four federal agents are standing outside the elevator bank. Your passport has been flagged, and your private jet in Teterboro has been grounded by the FAA.”
Marcus slumped back into his seat, completely defeated.
Elena leaned forward, her voice cutting through the suffocating tension with absolute, crystalline authority.
“The *Aegis-7* patent has been permanently transferred to an irrevocable family trust,” Elena said, looking directly at the remaining board members. “Fifty percent of the research will be released into the open-source scientific community to accelerate treatments for pediatric neuro-degenerative disorders. The remaining commercial rights will be managed directly by me.”
She paused, letting the weight of her words settle into the room.
“The Duca family is no longer in the business of profiting from poison,” Elena said. “You will submit your resignations by noon today. Every single one of you who looked the other way while Julian consolidated power will be scrubbed from this company. If you cooperate with the federal investigators, Matteo may decide not to pursue civil asset recovery against your private estates. If you do not... you will leave this building in the same manner Julian did.”
Not a single person spoke. Not a single person argued.
Matteo stood tall, looking down at the men who had plotted, conspired, and looked the other way while his family was torn to shreds.
“The meeting is adjourned,” Matteo said.

He took Elena’s hand, helping her rise from the table. Together, they walked out of the boardroom, leaving the ruins of the corrupt syndicate behind them in the dust of history.
