Chapter 11 - The Hidden Testament

By Friday morning, the legal landscape of the Vance family had turned into an absolute bloodbath.

Attorney Harrison Miller, who had represented my grandmother before her passing, called Arthur and me into his downtown Charleston office. The oak-paneled room was quiet, sunlight filtering through plantation shutters onto stacks of leather-bound files.

"The DNA results conducted on Dr. Robert Sterling and the samples provided from Thomas Vance's arrest booking are an unequivocal match," Miller announced, sliding the certified lab reports across the polished mahogany table. "Thomas is Dr. Sterling's biological son. Furthermore, testing on Eleanor’s personal samples confirmed that Lauren is also Sterling’s child."

Arthur sat silently, his hands resting on his knees. The betrayal had aged him, but there was an unmistakable dignity returning to his posture. The fog of thirty years of emotional abuse was lifting.

"What does this mean for the trust, Harrison?" Arthur asked quietly.

Miller adjusted his gold-rimmed spectacles and opened an embossed document tied with silk ribbon—Grandmother Vance’s true, unamended last will and testament.

"It means Eleanor’s prenuptial protections are completely null and void due to continuous marital fraud and paternity deceit," Miller said clearly. "Under South Carolina law, she is entitled to zero percent of the marital assets. Every cent she deposited into foreign holdings from the estate has been frozen by federal marshals."

"And the land portfolio?" I asked.

"The entire estate—the historic residential homes on the battery, the commercial developments in Mount Pleasant, the timberland holdings, and the primary coastal estate—reverts exclusively to the sole legitimate biological line," Miller said, looking directly at me. "To Arthur Vance for his lifetime, passing immediately and irrevocably to Claire Vance."

A sixty-million-dollar empire, built by my ancestors, which Eleanor had spent decades trying to steal for her secret family, now belonged entirely to my father and me.

"Where is Eleanor right now?" Arthur asked, his voice steady, resolute.

"She was granted a brief medical release to her private suite at the Charleston Harbor Hotel under electronic ankle monitoring, pending her formal indictment hearing tomorrow," Miller replied. "She has no access to funds. Her credit cards were declined this morning."

I looked at my father. He stood up, buttoning his jacket.

"Let’s go, Claire," Arthur said. "It's time to close this chapter."
