Chapter 6 - The Legal Fallout

By eight o’clock on Sunday morning, the rain had cleared, leaving the city under a sky of cold, brilliant blue. But inside the penthouse offices of Vance Logistics on the forty-second floor of the Financial Center, the atmosphere was warlike.

Daniel stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows, holding a paper cup of black coffee that had gone cold an hour ago. He was wearing jeans and a dark wool sweater—the clothes his father had brought him from home.

Behind him, two corporate attorneys from Marcus Sterling’s personal legal team were methodically combing through file cabinets alongside Daniel’s Chief Technology Officer, Sarah Chen.

“Every system access credential associated with Claire Montgomery has been revoked,” Sarah said, her fingers flying across her mechanical keyboard. “Her keycards are disabled. Her proxy email accounts are dead. And Daniel... we found something else.”

Daniel turned around slowly. “What?”

“Three nights ago,” Sarah said, turning her monitor toward him, “someone logged into our server room from Claire’s home terminal using your secondary administrative password. They downloaded the complete source code for our proprietary dispatch routing engine.”

Daniel set his coffee cup down on the desk. “Did she transfer it?”

“Not yet,” Sarah said. “She uploaded it to an encrypted cloud drive registered under an offshore LLC. But look at the destination IP. It matches a boutique consulting firm in Zurich owned by Julian Montgomery’s brother.”

One of Marcus Sterling’s attorneys, a sharp-featured woman named Linda Ross, looked up from a thick stack of printed logs.

“That’s corporate espionage, Daniel,” Linda said smoothly. “Combined with the fraudulent inducement on the land transfer and the criminal confinement of your mother, this ceases to be a domestic dispute. This is a multi-count federal indictment.”

Before Daniel could respond, the office doors swung open.

Claire Montgomery walked in.

She was not wearing her wedding gown now. She wore a tailored camel-hair coat, dark trousers, and oversized sunglasses, her hair pulled back into a severe ponytail. But the polished exterior could not hide the frantic, feral energy in her movements. Behind her, two building security guards stood hesitating in the doorway.

“Daniel!” Claire shouted, ignoring the attorneys and Sarah. “Tell these rent-a-cops to back off! They tried to stop me at the lobby elevators!”

Daniel raised a single hand toward the guards. “It’s fine, Gary. Leave the door open.”

The guards stepped back, though they remained within arm’s reach of the frame.

Claire marched up to the mahogany desk, slamming both hands down on the surface. “You turned your phone off! My father’s house is surrounded by reporters! Some blogger from the county herald got hold of Beatrice’s police report from last night! Do you have any idea what is happening out there?”

“I have a fairly clear idea,” Daniel said, his voice flat, completely devoid of the warmth or accommodation he had offered her for three years.

“We can fix this,” Claire said, leaning across the desk, her voice dropping into a rapid, desperate cadence. Her sunglasses had slipped down, revealing dark purple rings beneath her eyes. “Daniel, listen to me. We issue a joint statement. We say Eleanor suffered a momentary medical disorientation. We say the text from Beatrice was a misunderstanding—a tasteless prank played by an overzealous bridesmaid. We tell the press that we signed the registry privately this morning. The Kensington deal can still happen if we present a united front by noon!”

Daniel looked at her. For the first time, he saw her without the filter of his own affection. He saw the sharp, desperate hunger of a drowning narcissist who didn't care who she dragged under, as long as she stayed above water.

“Did you download my source code, Claire?” Daniel asked.

Claire blinked. Her mouth twitched. “What?”

“The Zurich drive,” Daniel said, pointing toward Sarah’s monitor. “Did you think I wouldn't notice twelve gigabytes of proprietary algorithm data moving through my private terminal at three in the morning while I was asleep beside you?”

The color drained from Claire’s cheeks. She stood up straight, pulling her coat tighter around herself.

“My father needed collateral for the Swiss bridge loan,” she said, her voice dropping into a defiant, brittle whisper. “It was temporary, Daniel! Once the municipal grant came through, we were going to license it back to Vance Logistics! You would have made millions in royal—”

“You stole my life’s work to pay off your father’s gambling debts in Chicago,” Daniel cut her off, stepping around the desk until he was standing two feet from her. “You tried to bulldoze the house my father built with his own hands. And you left my mother in a ditch on an abandoned road in forty-degree weather so she wouldn't embarrass you in front of people who don't even like you.”

“She’s nobody!” Claire screamed, losing all pretense of composure. Her face twisted into an ugly, furious sneer. “She lives in a house that smells like fried onions! She wears polyester! She’s an embarrassment, Daniel! Everything about your background is an embarrassment! I tried to save you from it! I tried to turn you into someone who belonged in our world!”

“Your world is bankrupt, Claire,” Daniel said quietly.

The office doors opened again.

This time, it wasn't security guards.

Two men in dark suits entered, accompanied by a female officer in a state trooper uniform. The lead agent pulled a leather badge case from his coat pocket and displayed it.

“Claire Montgomery?” the agent asked.

Claire spun around, her eyes widening in horror. “What is this?”

“Special Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Financial Crimes Division,” the man said calmly. “I have a warrant for your arrest on charges of wire fraud, attempted corporate theft, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny. We also have a warrant from the County District Attorney for criminal reckless endangerment in connection with the events on Old Mill Road.”

Claire stepped back, her heels clicking rapidly against the hardwood. “No. No, this is a mistake! My father is Julian Montgomery! You can’t touch me!”

“Your father was taken into custody forty minutes ago at his club, Ms. Montgomery,” Agent Miller replied without a trace of emotion. “Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”

Claire looked back at Daniel. For a fraction of a second, the terror in her eyes broke through the arrogance. “Daniel! Please! Tell them! Daniel, you love me!”

Daniel looked down at his desk, picked up the cold cup of coffee, and walked toward the window.

He didn't turn around when the metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the office. He didn't turn around when Claire began to scream his name, her voice rising into an hysterical wail as she was escorted down the hallway. He simply watched the morning sun reflect off the city river, feeling the terrible, cleansing weight of reality settle into his bones.
