Chapter 20 - The Midnight Subpoena

"He's ten minutes ahead of us," Agent Cole cursed, looking at his tactical watch. "It’s 6:15 AM. The international wires open in Zurich and London right now. If Vance's authorization goes through, that money vanishes into a hundred private crypto accounts across non-extradition jurisdictions!"

"He can't authorize it without the counter-signature," I said, stepping up to the keyboard. My fingers, gnarled from age and decades of ledger work, hovered over the mechanical keys with absolute precision.

"What counter-signature?" Lauren asked.

"Harrison Sterling died in custody three years ago," I explained. "Under the original Helios Alpha syndicate charter, if Sterling is deceased, the sole surviving authorized signatory for any asset liquidation is the senior court-appointed auditor."

"You," Jared realized, his eyes widening. "Dad... you are the only person alive who can release that money."

"Or freeze it permanently," I corrected.

Suddenly, the screen flared red. A remote judicial override message popped up:

`EMERGENCY ORDER ENTERED: U.S. DISTRICT COURT FOR NORTHERN ILLINOIS`

`PRESIDING: JUDGE WALTER VANCE`

`ORDER 24-CR-881: IMMEDIATE EXPUNCTION OF ALL AUDIT LEDGERS`

`WARRANT FOR ARREST ISSUED: ARTHUR BLAKE (TREASON / EVIDENCE TAMPERING)`

Above us, the faint sound of multiple vehicle engines rumbled across the concrete slab of Bay 4.

"Cole!" a voice shouted through the agent's tactical radio headset. "We have multiple black Suburbans breaching the outer gate! They're flying U.S. Marshals flags, but they aren't our division! It’s Vance’s judicial task force!"

"They tracked our mobile uplink," Cole said, drawing his sidearm. "We have five minutes before they breach this bunker."

"Jared," I ordered, my voice steady as an anchor. "Take Lauren behind the secondary server bank. Cole, cover the entrance. I need four minutes at this console."

"Arthur, they will shoot to kill under that warrant," Cole warned.

"They will try," I answered without looking back. "But a federal judge cannot overrule basic arithmetic."

I began typing the command sequence Diane had encoded twelve years ago. With each keystroke, I unraveled the layers of deceit: the eight thousand dollars laundered through Lauren's account was reassigned as direct evidence of judicial bribery; the forty-one million in Grand Cayman was frozen and rerouted to the federal restitution escrow fund for the victims of the Bay 4 explosion; and the audio recording of Diane's final testimony was uploaded directly to the clerk of the United States Supreme Court and the Chief Judge of the Seventh Circuit.

The first flashbang grenade exploded at the top of the bunker stairs with a deafening *CRACK*.
