Chapter 10 - The True Peace

August 9th came around again—our one-year wedding anniversary.

Micah and I spent the weekend at our brand-new mountain cabin in Estes Park, Colorado. The cabin sat on a high ridge overlooking a sweeping valley of pine trees and snow-capped peaks.

The air was cool, crisp, and filled with the scent of pine needles and wild earth.

On Saturday evening, we sat on the wooden deck surrounding our firepit, wrapped in warm blankets, holding glasses of red wine as the sun dipped below the Rocky Mountains, painting the sky in brilliant shades of violet, gold, and deep crimson.

My phone rang on the wooden side table.

I picked it up. It was a picture message from Dalia.

It was a screenshot of her community college portal showing her spring semester grades: Straight A's.

Below the screenshot was a simple text: Passed all my exams! Paid my tuition for the fall semester yesterday with my savings! Hope you and Micah are having an amazing anniversary!

I smiled, my heart feeling light and warm, and typed back: So proud of you, Dalia! Keep going!

Micah leaned over, resting his arm around my shoulders, looking at the glowing phone screen.

"Look at that," Micah whispered, kissing my temple. "She did it."

"She did," I agreed, setting the phone facedown on the table. "Because somebody finally loved her enough to let her fail."

I leaned back against Micah’s chest, watching the stars begin to sparkle across the darkening sky.

One year ago, I had sat in my living room on my wedding night, heartbroken, staring at a ruined cake and a shattered family, believing that saying no would destroy my life.

Now, as I looked out over the vast, peaceful valley, holding my husband's hand, I realized that saying no was the greatest act of love I had ever performed.

It hadn't destroyed my life. It had saved it.

May you like

It had freed my sister from her own entitlement. It had freed my father from his silent compliance. And most importantly, it had given me the one thing I had spent my entire life searching for:

Real, unshakeable, beautiful peace.
