Chapter 4 - Vanessa’s Public Humiliation

By noon on Tuesday, the scandal was the only topic of conversation across the city.

The press release issued by Sterling Global Infrastructure had hit the major business wires like an artillery shell. *“CEO Grant Mercer Terminated Amid Multi-Million Dollar Embezzlement Probe and Felony Domestic Battery Charges.”* The financial papers ran the headline alongside his mugshot—a grainy, disheveled image of Grant looking broken, furious, and humiliated in his county orange jumpsuit.

Every luxury brand, every socialite circle, and every country club in the tri-state area was buzzing with the news.

But Vanessa Mercer was still living in an alternate reality.

Vanessa had built an entire career as a luxury lifestyle influencer with over eight hundred thousand followers on Instagram and TikTok. Her brand, *“Living Luxe with Ness,”* was predicated on the lie that she was an heiress to a multi-billion-dollar construction fortune. Her feed was an endless parade of private jets, five-star hotel suites, haute couture unboxings, and champagne brunches.

She had convinced herself that Clara was just being petty, that Grant’s lawyers would fix everything within a week, and that her social status was entirely untouchable.

At 2:00 PM, Vanessa walked into *Maison de L’Élégance*, the most exclusive ultra-luxury boutique on Fifth Avenue.

She was flanked by her two sycophantic friends, Chloe and Harper, both of whom were clutching iced lattes and filming Vanessa’s entrance for a TikTok livestream.

“Hey, my loves!” Vanessa beamed into the smartphone camera mounted on her gimbal, flashing a practiced, porcelain-veneered smile. “We’re here doing a little post-wedding retail therapy! The drama back home is just too exhausting, so I decided to treat myself to the new autumn private collection! Say hi, girls!”

Chloe and Harper waved at the camera, giggling as hundreds of comments flooded the screen.

The boutique manager, Monsieur Henri, stepped forward with a hesitant, polite bow. He had catered to Vanessa for months because she spent lavishly on corporate black cards—cards that were registered under Sterling Crest Developments.

“Ah, Mademoiselle Mercer,” Henri said, his voice unusually strained. “Welcome. How may we assist you today?”

“Henri, darling!” Vanessa purred, waving a dismissive hand. “Bring out the croc-embossed Kelly bag in emerald green. The one reserved for VIP clients. And three bottles of Dom Pérignon. We’re doing an exclusive haul for my followers!”

“Of course, Mademoiselle,” Henri said, glancing nervously at an associate standing near the register. “Please, take a seat in the private salon.”

For forty-five minutes, Vanessa ran wild.

She posed with forty-thousand-dollar cashmere coats, draped herself in rare silk scarves, and selected three limited-edition designer handbags totaling over one hundred and twenty thousand dollars. She livestreamed the entire spectacle, boasting about her family’s “generational wealth” and casually dropping snide remarks about “jealous in-laws who don't understand class.”

The livestream viewer count spiked from two thousand to twenty-five thousand, then fifty thousand.

Vanessa’s eyes sparkled as she saw the numbers climb. “Look at that, girls! We’re breaking the algorithm today!”

She didn't notice the comments rolling past at blinding speed:

*“Wait, isn't her brother in jail for beating his wife?”*

*“Did you see the Wall Street Journal article? Their company is bankrupt!”*

*“Look at her spending stolen money on live!”*

*“Is this the girl whose dummy company took $1.8M?!”*

Vanessa ignored the chatter, assuming it was just internet trolls. She walked up to the marble payment counter, handed Henri the sleek matte-black titanium corporate credit card, and winked at the camera. “Ring it up, Henri. Let’s make it an even two hundred grand with the shoes.”

Henri slid the card through the terminal.

A sharp, shrill beep echoed through the boutique.

*TRANSACTION DECLINED: CODE 04 - PICK UP CARD / CONTACT LAW ENFORCEMENT.*

Henri cleared his throat, his face stiffening. “Um, Mademoiselle Mercer... the card has been declined.”

Vanessa’s smile froze. She laughed nervously, checking the camera. “Oh, that’s ridiculous. It’s an unlimited corporate black card. Try it again. The machine probably glitched.”

Henri ran it a second time.

*TRANSACTION DECLINED: ACCOUNT FROZEN BY ORDER OF US TRUSTEE.*

“Mademoiselle, I am sorry,” Henri said, his voice losing all its previous warmth. “The terminal indicates this account has been formally revoked and flagged for fraudulent use.”

“What?!” Vanessa shrieked, dropping her influencer persona in an instant. Her voice rose to an octave that pierced the salon. “Do you know who I am?! I’m Vanessa Mercer! My brother is Grant Mercer! Run it again, you incompetent fool!”

“Hey, Ness...” Chloe whispered, tapping her shoulder, her face pale as she looked at the comments streaming on the phone. “Ness, look at the chat... you need to turn the stream off.”

“Shut up, Chloe!” Vanessa snapped, snatching the card back. “I have another card!”

She pulled out Diane’s auxiliary gold card and slammed it onto the counter. “Use this one!”

Henri ran it.

*DECLINED.*

She pulled out her personal debit card.

*DECLINED: INSUFFICIENT FUNDS.*

“This is an outrage!” Vanessa screamed, her chest heaving. “My brother will buy this entire damn boutique and fire you into the street! How dare you embarrass me like this!”

“Actually, Ms. Mercer, I don't think your brother is buying anything today.”

A calm, deep voice echoed from the boutique’s entrance.

The heavy glass doors opened, and two uniformed officers from the NYPD financial crimes task force stepped inside, accompanied by Leo Drake, the chief private investigator for the Sterling family.

The livestream was still running. Seventy thousand people were watching in real-time.

“Vanessa Mercer?” the lead detective asked, showing his gold badge.

Vanessa took a step back, knocking over a display stand of crystal perfume bottles, which shattered across the polished marble. “What... what is this? Who are you?!”

“I am Detective Reynolds, NYPD Financial Crimes,” the detective said, pulling a folded warrant from his trench coat. “We have an active seizure warrant issued by the State Supreme Court for all assets purchased through fraudulent wire transfers originating from Sterling Crest Developments account number ending in 4092.”

“No! You can’t do that! These are my clothes!” Vanessa wailed, her voice cracking into pure hysteria.

“These clothes were purchased with stolen funds,” Leo Drake stated calmly, pointing his tablet at the bags on the counter. “Furthermore, Ms. Mercer, we have a warrant for your personal arrest regarding the grand larceny of a twenty-two-carat diamond tennis bracelet and a Patek Philippe Nautilus watch stolen from the residence of Clara Sterling on October 12th.”

The comments on the livestream were moving so fast the screen was a blur of text and emojis:

*“SHE GOT ARRESTED ON LIVE OMG!”*

*“CLARA STERLING TOOK EVERYTHING BACK!”*

*“THE BRACELET WAS STOLEN?! SHE’S A THIEF!”*

*“RECORD THIS! THIS IS PEAK DRAMA!”*

“Chloe, shut the phone off! Turn it off!” Vanessa shrieked, lunging for the phone.

Harper grabbed the phone and stepped back, shaking her head. “No way, Vanessa. I’m not getting mixed up in your criminal crap! You told us you were a billionaire!”

“Hands behind your back, Ms. Mercer,” Detective Reynolds said, catching her wrists and spinning her around.

*Click. Snap.*

The handcuffs locked into place around Vanessa’s manicured wrists.

She began to scream at the top of her lungs, thrashing like a toddler in a supermarket aisle. “Let me go! Mom! Call Mom! Grant! Clara, you witch! You set me up! You ruined my life! I’m an influencer! You can’t put handcuffs on an influencer!”

The boutique patrons stood frozen, recording the entire breakdown on their personal phones. Monsieur Henri quietly gathered the unpaid luxury goods and placed them back behind the velvet ropes.

As Detective Reynolds led a sobbing, kicking, makeup-smeared Vanessa out of the boutique into the glaring daylight of Fifth Avenue, the paparazzi—tipped off twenty minutes earlier by Arthur Vance’s office—swarmed the scene.

Dozens of flashbulbs exploded in Vanessa’s face.

The image of Vanessa Mercer, the self-proclaimed “Queen of Luxury,” being pushed into the back of a police cruiser in handcuffs with mascara running down her cheeks would become the number-one trending topic on Twitter and TikTok within the hour.

The caption written by the internet was brutal and unanimous:
