Chapter 5 - The Web Unravels

With Julian and Eleanor back in maximum-security remand, the psychological weight lifting off my shoulders was immense, but Marcus Vance refused to let me drop my guard. He relocated me from the public hospital to a secure, undisclosed safe house in the countryside, staffed around the clock by former military guards.
For two weeks, the safe house became the command center for a massive federal and state investigation. Victoria and Marcus worked tirelessly, using the decrypted files from Julian’s laptop diagnostic backup to build an unassailable case.
One rainy afternoon, as I sat near the fireplace sipping warm tea and feeling my baby move inside me, Marcus walked into the living room holding a thick Manila folder.
"We just hit the jackpot," Marcus said, pulling up a chair opposite me.
"What happened?" I asked.
"The Department of Justice just unsealed a multi-count indictment against Victor Croft and Senator Donald Mercer," Marcus revealed, handing me a copy of the press release. "When Julian was taken back into custody, his legal team tried to destroy the secondary servers at Sterling & Croft Financial. But federal agents raided the building before they could wipe the drives."
I scanned the document, my eyes widening at the names and charges. "Bribery, racketeering, illegal weapons trafficking, and tax evasion..."
"It gets better," Marcus continued, leaning forward. "Faced with mandatory life sentences in federal prison, Senator Mercer cracked. He’s cutting a deal with the Special Prosecutor. And guess who he’s throwing under the bus to save himself?"
"Julian and Eleanor," I guessed.
"Exactly," Marcus smiled grimly. "Mercer gave a sworn deposition this morning. He confirmed that on the night of the attack, he and Victor Croft were at the Sterling estate finalizing an offshore transaction. He testified that Julian and Eleanor deliberately staged the assault in the courtyard to demonstrate to Croft how 'ruthlessly' they handled domestic liabilities and potential whistleblowers."
A sickening chill washed over me. "They treated my torture like an executive demonstration... a show of strength for their criminal partners?"
"Yes," Marcus said softly, his voice dropping into a tone of gentle respect. "They viewed you as a weak, helpless pawn they could manipulate and discard. But that 'pawn' just took down a political syndicate, a corporate empire, and a multi-million-dollar criminal ring."
Before I could answer, Victoria walked into the room, her coat soaked from the rain outside, holding a tablet with a live news broadcast playing on the screen.
"Turn up the volume," Victoria said sharply.
On the screen, a news anchor stood outside the Federal District Court building, speaking urgently into a microphone:
"...breaking news in the Sterling Financial scandal. Senior partner Julian Sterling has reportedly offered a full confession in exchange for a plea deal, but sources inside the District Attorney's office report that lead prosecutor Victoria Vance has flatly rejected any plea bargain that does not include maximum consecutive life terms without parole..."
Victoria clicked the tablet off and looked at me. "Julian’s high-priced lawyers are jumping ship. Harrison Vance resigned as lead counsel an hour ago after federal agents opened an investigation into his firm for money laundering."
I looked out the window at the rain falling over the pine trees. The monsters who had treated me like disposable property were turning on each other like starved wolves in a cage.

"When does the trial start?" I asked turning back to Victoria.
"In three days," Victoria replied. "And Clara... you are going to be our star witness."
