Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

We hit the asphalt hard, rolling across the wet road surface.
Victoria scrambled to her hands and knees, gasping for breath, her expensive suit ruined, her hair wild and matted with dirt and blood. She looked around frantically, but her mercenaries had already been subdued by Marcus, and the helicopter above was aborting its landing, banking sharply toward the ocean to save itself.
She was completely alone.
I stood up slowly, wiping blood from a cut on my lip, and walked toward her.
From the passenger door of Marcus’s SUV, a tiny figure stepped out into the light.
"Mommy?" Leo called out softly.
Victoria looked up, her eyes darting from Leo to me, then to the sounding sirens echoing down the bridge from both ends. Dozens of state police cruisers and federal law enforcement vehicles were converging on the scene, their red and blue lights painting the fog in brilliant flashes of color.
"It’s over, Victoria," I said, stepping between her and my son, completely cutting off her view of him. "You lost."
Victoria fell back onto her elbows, letting out a breathless, defeated laugh as the police officers swarmed the bridge with weapons drawn, yelling orders to freeze.
"Drop your weapons! Hands in the air! Do it now!" the lead officer barked over a bullhorn.
Marcus immediately put his hands up, stepping away from the subdued guards, while I stood tall, my arms held loosely at my sides, looking down at the woman who had tried to erase my family from existence.
Federal agents rushed forward, slamming Victoria onto the cold asphalt and pulling her hands behind her back in heavy steel handcuffs.
"Victoria Vance," an FBI agent read as they hauled her to her feet. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, racketeering, and treason."
As they dragged her toward a transport van, Victoria glared at me over her shoulder, her face twisted in pure malice. "You think you won, Sarah? You think you can just go back to your normal life after what you’ve seen?"
I didn't answer her. I didn't need to. Her words were just the desperate noise of a monster whose cage had finally been locked.
I turned around and walked toward my son.
Leo ran across the wet bridge, his arms stretched wide, tears streaming down his small, pale cheeks. I fell to my knees and caught him in my arms, pulling him so tight against my chest that I could feel the strong, rhythmic beat of his healthy heart through his jacket.
"I’m sorry, baby," I sobbed, burying my face in his damp hair, letting my tears finally flow freely after the long, nightmare night. "I’m so sorry you had to go through this."
"You saved us, Mommy," Leo whispered into my ear, his tiny hands holding onto my jacket like an anchor in a storm. "I knew you were just sleeping on the floor. I knew you were going to wake up."

Marcus walked over, holding a warm blanket that he wrapped around both of our shoulders. He looked down at us with a soft, tired smile, the heavy burden of three years of seeking justice finally lifting from his eyes.
"The federal prosecutors have already seized all of Vance Global's assets," Marcus said quietly. "Your family's trust is fully secured and clear of any encumbrances. David... well, David will never be seen again. You and Leo are completely free."
