Chapter 6 - The Interception at Table One

The ceremony had been a masterclass in hollow melodrama.

Serena had cried on cue. Felix had delivered a trembling, theatrical hand-off at the altar. Julian had choked out his vows while his eyes darted toward the exits every thirty seconds. And through it all, sitting in the front row, Federal Judge Callahan Whitaker had sat motionless as a stone monolith, his cold, piercing eyes tracking every twitch of his nephew’s hands.

Now, the grand ballroom of the Palm Beach Country Club was lit by crystal chandeliers that cast fractured, golden light across two hundred tables.

The music was loud, brassy, and aggressive.

Felix Ellison was already three martinis deep, standing at the microphone near the head table, basking in the glow of the spotlights.

“To our distinguished guests! To the Whitakers!” Felix bellowed into the microphone, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “Today, the Ellison family welcomes the dawn of a new era! We have always believed that excellence attracts excellence! That true class, true pedigree, cannot be bought—it must be bred!”

Polite, thin applause rippled through the Whitaker side of the room. The Ellison side cheered loudly, clinking their glasses.

Serena sat at Table One, radiating smug triumph. She had changed into a second, tighter reception dress, a diamond choker glittering against her throat—diamonds that Marcus had already confirmed were synthetic zirconiums rented from a Beverly Hills showroom.

Beside her sat Julian, knocking back straight scotch like water, his leg bouncing underneath the linen table runner with manic speed.

And at the head of Table One sat Judge Callahan Whitaker. He hadn't touched his food. A single glass of San Pellegrino sat before him.

“And now,” Felix continued, gesturing grandly with his glass, “my daughter Serena would like to offer a toast to family... and to those who work so hard in the background to support our greatness!”

Serena stood up, taking the wireless microphone from the waitstaff with an angelic, rehearsed smile.

“Thank you, Daddy,” Serena purred into the mic. She turned her gaze slowly across the room, deliberately searching until she found me.

I was standing near the entrance of the ballroom, still wearing the heavy black cashmere coat, my hands resting behind my back in a standard parade rest.

“I want to take a special moment tonight,” Serena said, her voice dripping with fake, saccharine sweetness, “to acknowledge my older sister, Celeste. Most of you probably haven't met her. Celeste chose a very different path from mine. While I dedicated my life to the arts and philanthropy, Celeste... well, Celeste has been doing administrative work for the Navy. Filing papers, sorting mail for our brave soldiers.”

A low murmur of polite, patronizing pity rippled through the room.

“She’s so humble,” Serena laughed, a sharp, cutting sound. “She even wore her winter coat to my reception because she didn't have time to buy a dress! But we love her anyway. Celeste, darling, raise your glass! Even the little people deserve a toast tonight!”

Laughter erupted from several tables near the front. Vivian was clapping enthusiastically, mouthing *bravo* toward Serena.

I didn't move. I didn't blink.

I slowly unbuttoned the top button of my cashmere coat.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Judge Callahan Whitaker slowly turned his head toward the back of the room. His gaze locked onto me as I shrugged the heavy black coat off my shoulders and let it drop onto the floor behind me.

The pristine, snow-white fabric of my Navy mess dress caught the light of the chandeliers like a flare.

The gold Commander boards gleamed.

The ribbons across my chest—the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star with Combat 'V', the Purple Heart with double stars—blazed in high relief against the white wool.

The laughter in the room began to choke out, table by table, like candles being snuffed out in a draft.

Silence rolled across the ballroom in a suffocating wave.

Felix froze at the edge of the stage. Serena’s smile turned into a frozen, horrified grimace.

And at Table One, Federal Judge Callahan Whitaker rose to his feet.
