Chapter 10 - The New Command

Six months later. Fort Cavazos, Texas.

The morning sun broke over the military parade grounds, illuminating hundreds of soldiers lined up in perfect formation. The air was crisp, smelling of morning dew, diesel fuel, and crisp starch.

Today was the official change of responsibility ceremony for the 4th Tactical Intelligence Advisory Group.

I stood at the front of the formation, clad in my dress blues, holding the unit's gilded sword. Beside me stood the Battalion Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Vance—Marcus Vance, who had recently been promoted and assigned as the unit's commanding officer.

"Master Sergeant Sinclair Shaw," Colonel Vance’s voice echoed over the loudspeaker. "Assume command of the NCO corps."

I stepped forward, my movements crisp, fluid, and powerful. I took the sword from his hands, held it high against my chest, and turned to face the hundreds of young men and women standing in formation before me.

These were my soldiers. Men and women from all walks of life—blue-collar kids from small towns, working-class grunts, people who had bled in the dirt and given their youth to protect something greater than themselves. They didn't care about salad forks, country club memberships, or Armani suits. They cared about loyalty, honor, and knowing that the person standing next to them had their back.

"Group... ATTENTION!" I commanded, my voice booming across the parade grounds with absolute, unquestioned authority.

In unison, hundreds of boots slammed onto the pavement with a thunderous CRACK.

From the VIP bleachers at the side of the field, a small group of people watched with beaming pride.

Phoebe sat in the front row, holding a professional camera, snapping photos with a massive smile on her face. Beside her sat several senior military leaders, veteran advocates, and local business owners who had partnered with Shaw Tactical Solutions.

There were no Mercer signs. No fake laughter. No toxic family members leeching off my hard work. I had surrounded myself with a real family—a family forged in the fires of mutual respect, shared sacrifice, and unshakeable loyalty.

After the ceremony concluded, the field opened up for the reception. Soldiers came up to shake my hand, congratulating me on taking command.

Phoebe walked up, holding two camera bodies over her shoulders, grinning from ear to ear.

"Look at you, First Sergeant Shaw," she teased, giving me a crisp, mock salute. "Or should I say Master Sergeant?"

"Just Sinclair is fine, Phoebe," I laughed, relaxing my posture and wrapping her in a warm, genuine hug. "Thank you for being here. You’ve been a rock through all of this."

"Are you kidding?" Phoebe said, pulling back to look at me. "I wouldn't miss this for the world. You built an empire out of the ashes, Sinclair. You proved that real strength doesn't need a high-society validation."

As we walked toward the reception hall, my phone chimed with a notification. It was an email from my legal counsel in San Marcos.

Notice: All restitution funds from the Mercer receivership have been fully processed. The duplex is completely debt-free, and your private firm has secured a $500,000 state contract to provide financial security training to Texas National Guard units.

I locked my phone and slipped it into my pocket.

Everything I had lost had been restored—not by luck, not by inheritance, and not by leeching off others. It was restored through discipline, truth, and relentless tactical execution.
