Chapter 4 - The Retaliation

The night brought an unsettling, suffocating silence to the city.
Following my public statement, the political earthquake in Washington, D.C. reached catastrophic proportions. By 2000 hours, three senior members of the House Ethics Committee had issued public statements demanding Congressman Rhys Hale’s immediate resignation. Major corporate campaign donors were publicly withdrawing their funding, and the United States Attorney's Office formally announced that a federal grand jury had been convened to review charges of felony assault, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice.
Rhys was bleeding out politically. His golden career, built on decades of deceit, dirty money, and intimidation, was dissolving before his eyes.
I sat at Ariana's kitchen table, eating a bowl of plain rice—the only soft food my fractured jaw could handle. Every chew brought a sharp, dull ache, but I forced myself to finish every bite. I needed my strength.
Ariana sat nearby, her eyes glued to her network security monitoring tools.
Suddenly, a harsh red alert box flashed across her center screen, accompanied by an eerie, high-pitched digital chime.
Ariana froze. Her pale face drained of all color.
"Maddox," she whispered, her voice tight with sudden, unadulterated panic.
"What is it?" I asked, setting my spoon down instantly.
"Someone just initiated a unauthorized remote wipe protocol on my primary external drive array," Ariana said, her fingers flying across the keyboard in a desperate attempt to counter the cyber attack. "They aren't trying to steal data. They're deploying a military-grade zero-day wiper virus. It’s scrubbing everything—our backup files, the raw video archives, the bank transaction records!"
My military instincts flared instantly. "Disconnect the physical drives! Unplug the landlines now!"
Ariana lunged forward, grabbing the thick bundle of fiber-optic cables plugged into her main server rack, yanking them out with a sharp metallic snap.
The red alert boxes stopped flashing, but half her screens went completely dead.
"They breached my primary firewall using a classified government-grade exploit," Ariana breathed, her hands shaking as she stared at the dark monitors. "That wasn't a standard civilian hacker, Maddox. That was a private defense contractor cybersecurity team. The kind of shadow operators Rhys hires through his committee connections."
Before I could answer, the power in the entire apartment building abruptly cut out.
The humming server fans went dead. The lights flickered and vanished, plunging the cramped apartment into total, pitch-black darkness.
"Perimeter breached," I whispered, my voice dropping into a lethal, low register.
I didn't panic. My combat training instantly took over. In the dark, I moved with quiet, practiced grace. I reached into my tactical bag sitting near the couch, pulling out my military-issue flashlight and a heavy, weighted tactical knife I kept in my deployment gear.
"Ariana," I commanded quietly, grabbing her arm and pulling her low to the floor behind the reinforced concrete breakfast bar. "Stay down. Do not move. Do not make a sound."
Through the thin wooden door of the apartment, I heard the faint, metallic scrape of rubber-soled combat boots moving stealthily down the carpeted hallway outside.
They weren't cops. Cops don't cut power to a whole building and move silently in dark corridors. These were private security contractors—mercenaries hired by Rhys to perform an off-the-books wet-work recovery operation. They were here to secure the physical drives, eliminate any remaining evidence, and neutralize me permanently under the cover of a dark, unmonitored home invasion.
I crouched low near the edge of the kitchen counter, my fingers wrapping tightly around the textured hilt of my tactical knife. My heart rate dropped into a slow, rhythmic, combat-ready beat.
A faint click echoed from the front door.
A thin, silver lock-picking tool slipped through the keyhole. Within three seconds, the heavy deadbolt turned back with a soft thud.
The heavy oak door creaked open an inch.
Through the narrow gap, I saw the dim beam of an infrared tactical light cutting through the dusty dark air. A tall, heavily built man wearing dark tactical gear, a ballistic vest, and a suppressed sidearm stepped quietly into the foyer. Behind him, a second operative moved into position to cover the hallway.
They thought they were entering a dark apartment filled with two defenseless women. They thought they were hunting easy targets.
They forgot that one of those targets was a battle-tested Sergeant in the United States Army who had spent three years conducting night operations in hostile terrain.
I waited until the first operative took two steps past the kitchen counter, his back turned slightly toward my position.
I struck.
I lunged out from behind the counter like a shadow, driving my shoulder hard into his kidney while simultaneously reaching up to grab the wrist holding his suppressed pistol.
The operative let out a muffled grunt of surprise as the weapon discharged into the floor with a soft pfft sound, sending a bullet tearing into the scuffed hardwood.
Before he could regain his footing, I twisted his gun arm violently downward, using his own momentum to slam his face hard into the marble edge of the kitchen counter. A sickening crack echoed through the dark as his nose broke, spraying blood across the white stone.
He dropped the suppressed pistol. I kicked it hard across the floor toward Ariana.
"Ariana! Secure the weapon!" I barked.
The second operative in the doorway reacted instantly, raising his own weapon and sweeping the tactical light toward my position.
I didn't hesitate. I grabbed the first operative by his heavy tactical vest, hauling his dazed body in front of me as a human shield just as the second operative fired two rapid shots.
The muffled rounds slammed hard into the ballistic plate of the first operative's vest, sending a shocking thud through his chest, but keeping me entirely unharmed.
I kicked the first operative forward into his partner, sending both men crashing backward into the narrow hallway outside.
I lunged forward, grabbed the edge of the heavy steel apartment door, and slammed it shut with all my strength, throwing the heavy deadbolt back into place.
Click.
"Ariana! Primary egress! Move!" I shouted, turning around in the dark.
Ariana was already on her feet, holding the suppressed pistol in both hands, her pale face illuminated by the faint glow of her phone screen. She had pulled a primary backup solid-state hard drive out of a hidden floor safe under her desk.
"I have the master data drive!" Ariana shouted over the sound of heavy boots slamming against the outside of the door. "Emergency fire escape, now!"
We sprinted toward the back window of the apartment, kicking open the rusty iron latch, and stepped out onto the cold, wet iron steps of the Arlington fire escape just as a heavy breaching charge detonated against the front door inside, blowing the wooden frame off its hinges in a shower of sparks and splinters.
We scrambled down the iron stairs into the dark, rain-slick alleyway below, our boots slapping hard against the wet asphalt as we disappeared into the night.

Rhys had sent hitmen to silence me. He had escalated from physical domestic abuse to state-level criminal violence.
He thought he could erase me in the dark. But all he had done was guarantee that when I struck back, I wouldn't stop until his entire world was burnt to absolute ash.
