Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The words "severing all financial ties" sent a shockwave through the Mitchell family. George Mitchell’s face went completely gray. Mitchell Holdings was heavily leveraged, relying almost entirely on a $150 million line of credit and an upcoming merger with Carter Global to stay solvent. Without Eleanor Carter’s endorsement, the company was a hollow shell.
"Ethan, wait! You can't do this!" George pleaded, stepping over the muddy grass, completely abandoning his aristocratic pride. "Our contracts are signed! The Dallas and Atlanta investors are inside right now waiting to finalize the deal!"
"Then you had better go inside and tell them the deal is off," Ethan said bitterly.
"Mrs. Carter, please!" Patricia cried out, running up to me with her hands clasped in front of her. "We beg for your forgiveness! Vanessa is young, she made a foolish mistake! She was stressed about the party planning! Please, don't destroy our family over a moment of bad judgment!"
I looked at Patricia with a calm, unyielding expression. "Bad judgment is spilling a drink, Mrs. Mitchell. Cruelty is turning a hose on a defenseless person and inviting others to laugh at her. You didn't stop her. You encouraged her. You asked her to check my bag to make sure I hadn't stolen anything."
Patricia flinched, shrinking back as if struck.
"Ethan," I said softly, turning to my son. "My car is waiting down the street. Let us leave."
"Yes, Mother," Ethan replied. He placed a protective arm around my waist, guiding me away from the center of the lawn.
"Ethan! Don't leave me!" Vanessa screamed, running after us in her wet ivory dress. She caught Ethan’s sleeve, her nails digging into the fabric. "I love you! We can fix this! Don't let her come between us! She’s just a bitter old woman who—"
SLAP.
The sound echoed loudly across the estate. It wasn't Ethan who had struck her, nor was it me.
George Mitchell had stepped up and slapped his own daughter across the face.
Vanessa stumbled back, holding her flushed cheek in complete shock. "Father...?"
"You foolish, arrogant girl!" George shouted, his voice shaking with uncontrollable rage and panic. "You just ruined everything! You ruined this family!"
Vanessa began to sob hysterically, dropping to her knees in the very mud where she had forced me down minutes earlier. Her designer dress was ruined, her hair disheveled, and the thirty elite guests watched in uncomfortable silence as the powerful Mitchell family unraveled before their eyes.
Ethan didn't look back. He walked me down the long, paved driveway toward the iron gates of the Belle Meade estate. Parked discreetly around the corner was a sleek black Maybach, flanked by two security SUVs. My driver, Marcus, immediately stepped out, opening the door for us with deep concern on his face.
"Madam! What happened?" Marcus asked, seeing my soaked clothes.
"A simple test, Marcus," I said softly as I stepped into the warm leather interior of the luxury vehicle. "And the results were crystal clear."
As the Maybach pulled away from the curb, Ethan sat beside me, staring out the window in total silence. His head was in his hands, his shoulders tense.
"I'm sorry, Mother," Ethan said softly, his voice thick with emotion. "I brought that evil into your life. I was so blinded by her beauty, her background, and the image she presented that I never saw who she really was."
I reached out and took his trembling hand. "Do not apologize, my son. It is far better to discover the truth on the lawn today than in a courtroom or a broken home five years from now."
"What do we do now?" Ethan asked, looking at me.

I retrieved my phone from the tote bag, tapping the screen to open the recorded video file. The footage was crisp, clear, and damning.
"Now," I said quietly, "we ensure that no other innocent person ever suffers at the hands of the Mitchells again."
