Chapter 8 - The Fugitive's Reckoning

The gray asphalt of the Teterboro runway stretched out beneath a heavy, overcast autumn sky. Wind whipped across the tarmac, carrying the bitter scent of aviation fuel and burning rubber.

By the time Daniel’s truck screeched to a halt outside the executive flight terminal, the scene was already in chaos.

A chain-link security gate hung off its hinges, crushed inward where Marcus’s black unmarked SUV had rammed straight through the perimeter barrier. Red and blue emergency lights strobe-flashed against the silver fuselage of a sleek twin-engine Gulfstream private jet sitting fifty yards away on the apron.

The jet’s right turbine was whining down, cutting into a low, dying whistle as state police cruisers and unmarked tactical sedans boxed the aircraft in from every conceivable angle.

Daniel and I jumped out of the truck, the cold wind whipping my hair across my face.

"Stay behind the perimeter line, ma'am!" a state trooper shouted, his hand resting on his sidearm as we approached the tarmac barrier.

"I’m Vanessa Carter!" I screamed over the roar of the dying engines. "Detective Marcus Vance is expecting us!"

Marcus turned from where he was coordinating his tactical team near the boarding stairs. He saw me, nodded grimly to the trooper, and waved us forward. "Let them through! Keep the perimeter tight!"

Daniel gripped my arm as we stepped onto the tarmac, our shoes crunching over shattered safety glass from the breached gate.

At the bottom of the Gulfstream’s lowered boarding stairs, Patricia Carter stood frozen in the headlights of three police cruisers.

She looked nothing like the polished, untouchable suburban matriarch who had ruled our family with an iron fist. Her beige cashmere coat was splattered with mud along the hem. Her blonde hair, usually styled in an immaculate French twist, hung in wild, disheveled strands around her pale, frantic face. At her feet lay two heavy leather duffel bags stuffed with cash and stolen family heirlooms.

Beside her, Brooke was backing away toward the wing of the aircraft, clutching a designer handbag against her chest like a shield. Her face was twisted into a mask of pure, unhinged venom.

"Patricia Carter! Brooke Vance!" Marcus’s amplified voice echoed through the PA system of his squad car. "Keep your hands where we can see them and step away from the aircraft! You are under arrest for attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and felony fraud!"

"This is a mistake!" Patricia shrieked, her voice shrill, cracking with hysteria as she threw her hands into the air. "Officers, you don't understand! I didn't do anything! It was Brooke! It was all Brooke!"

I stopped dead in my tracks, ten yards away from my mother. The sheer, shameless cowardice of her words knocked the breath from my lungs.

Brooke spun around, her eyes widening in disbelief as she stared at her own mother. "What did you just say?!"

"She planned it!" Patricia screamed, pointing a trembling, manicured finger directly at Brooke. "She couldn't get pregnant! She was obsessed! She told me if we didn't get rid of Vanessa's baby, the family fortune would be lost forever! She forced me to take Lily by the fire! She told me she had the CPS paperwork ready! I was trying to save our legacy! She manipulated me!"

"You lying, pathetic old monster!" Brooke screamed, completely losing control. She lunged at Patricia, her manicured nails clawing at Patricia’s face. "You were the one who told me Vanessa was worthless! You were the one who said an obedient cow like Vanessa didn't deserve twenty-two million dollars! You told me you would throw that brat into the fire yourself so I could adopt a surrogate child and claim the trust!"

The two women collided in a frantic, undignified brawl on the tarmac, screeching insults that laid bare thirty years of poisonous, transactional narcissism. The masks were completely gone. The golden daughter and the doting mother were tearing each other apart like wild dogs over scraps of meat.

"Enough!" Julian’s voice cut through the wind like a whip.

Julian stepped out from the shadow of the aircraft’s landing gear, holding a thick legal binder and a digital tablet that displayed the open arrest warrants signed by the state’s chief magistrate.

Brooke froze at the sound of her estranged husband's voice. She released Patricia, who collapsed onto her knees on the tarmac, weeping ugly, theatrical tears into her mud-stained sleeves.

Brooke smoothed her designer jacket with shaking hands, trying desperately to reassemble the shattered fragments of her charm. "Julian... baby, listen to me. You know how Mom is. She’s sick. She’s had dementia for months. She set this whole thing up. I was just trying to protect our marriage! I did it for us, Julian! For our family!"

Julian looked down at her with an expression of such profound, unadulterated disgust that Brooke visibly flinched.

"Our marriage was over the day you stole three hundred thousand dollars from our joint account to pay off Dr. Byrne," Julian said, his voice flat, devoid of any pity. "Our marriage was over when you stood on that patio, raised a glass of champagne, and told Vanessa she brought it on herself while our niece was falling toward a fire."

"Julian, please—" Brooke begged, taking a desperate step toward him, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. "I’m your wife!"

"Not anymore," Julian replied coldly. He reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a thick envelope containing signed divorce petitions and an immediate asset freeze order, and dropped it onto the wet asphalt at her feet. "You’re an inmate, Brooke. And you’re going to spend the next twenty-five years in a maximum-security state facility."

Brooke looked down at the papers, her breath hitching. Then, her eyes shifted past Julian—and locked onto me.
