Chapter 13 - Ashes over the Three Rivers

The cold morning rain fell like lead pellets against the windshield of the armored SUV as it sped toward the flaming wreckage of Neville Island Warehouse 4.

Sadie sat in the passenger seat, wearing a tailored black trench coat over dark slacks, her hair pulled back into a severe, practical knot. Her hands were steady on the leather portfolio in her lap. Marcelo sat beside her, silent as a gargoyle, an unlit cigar clenched between his teeth while he checked the magazine of a customized black Beretta before clicking it back into his shoulder holster.

"It wasn't Castiglione," Sadie said, breaking the heavy silence of the cabin.

Marcelo glanced at her. "He had the motive. You humiliated him."

"Federico is greedy, not suicidal," Sadie argued, tapping the printed shipping manifests she had pulled from the Vieri server before they left the estate. "If Federico blew the fuel depot, he’d destroy his own coal barges sitting at the adjacent slip. He doesn't have the capital to absorb that loss. This wasn't an act of revenge. This was an act of erasure."

Leo, driving from the front seat, checked the rearview mirror. "Erasure of what, Donna Sadie?"

"The paper trail," Sadie said, her eyes narrowing as the black plumes of smoke loomed through the fog ahead. "The warehouse Boyd was using when he forged my signature on the loan. It wasn't just a dummy corporation for Boyd’s gambling debts. Boyd was working with someone higher up in the city’s transit commission. Someone who was moving untraceable cargo through my grandmother’s riverfront parcel."

When they pulled onto the muddy industrial yard, fire crews were already battling the roaring blaze. Four Vieri enforcers stood guard over a sooty metal container that had been dragged clear of the inferno by a forklift.

Marcelo helped Sadie down into the muddy gravel, his hand never leaving the small of her back. The heat from the burning steel structure pushed against them like an open oven door, smelling of diesel, burning plastic, and ozone.

"Report," Marcelo barked at the squad leader.

"The detonator was commercial grade, Don Marcelo," the guard said, wiping soot from his brow. "Remote trigger. But whoever planted it didn't count on the backup fire suppression kicking in early. We managed to drag this vault out of the administrative office before the roof collapsed."

The vault door was warped from heat, but the heavy electronic lock was fried. Marcelo gestured to Leo, who wedged a heavy crowbar into the seam and wrenched it open with a groan of metal.

Inside lay charred remnants of cash, burnt hard drives—and a single fireproof titanium lockbox, stamped with the insignia of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Sadie stepped forward, ignoring the drifting ash that dusted the shoulders of her coat. "Open it."

Leo used a portable cutting torch to slice through the lockbox hinges. Inside lay three pristine blue passports, stacks of bearer bonds, and a thick surveillance logbook.

Sadie pulled the logbook out, flipping through the smoke-scented pages. Her breath hitched in her throat.

Past the shipping schedules and payment vouchers were dates and times. Every entry corresponded to her old housekeeping shifts at the hotel.

*October 12: Target on floor 4. Cleaning room 412.*

*October 18: Target delayed by floor supervisor. Shift extended 30 minutes.*

*November 02: Target observant. Cart position altered.*

"It wasn't Boyd who set me up," Sadie whispered, her voice trembling slightly before turning into hard stone. "Boyd was just the guard dog keeping me in line. Someone hired Boyd to marry me six years ago."

Marcelo took the logbook from her hands. His jaw tightened so hard that Sadie could hear his teeth grind.

"They didn't just want the hotel assassination, did they?" Marcelo’s voice was dangerously calm—the terrifying quiet that precedes a hurricane.

"No," Sadie said, her dark eyes flashing with pure fire as the pieces locked into place. "My grandmother’s land has the only deep-water access that bypasses the federal weigh stations on the Ohio River. They couldn't buy it from Nana Rose, and they couldn't buy it from me. So they planted Boyd to ruin me, break my spirit, and steal the deed through debt. And when I accidentally broke their hitman's spine with my cart... their whole timeline collapsed."

Marcelo turned to Leo. "Where is Boyd Gable right now?"

"In the federal holding wing at Allegheny County Jail, boss. Awaiting transfer to state prison."

Marcelo pulled his phone from his coat. "Cancel the transfer. We are going to have a private conversation with my wife’s ex-husband."
