Chapter 11 - The Shadow Ledger

The glass-and-steel boardroom on the top floor of Aegis Dynamic Systems was bathed in crisp afternoon sunlight, but the air still held the ghosts of men who had tried to steal it.

At precisely 13:55, I stepped out of the private elevator accompanied by Rachel Bennett and Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Hale. The mahogany double doors swung wide. Where Beckett Carter’s handpicked cronies and Donald Vance’s corrupt sycophants had once sat sneering at balance sheets, there now sat seven career engineers, three retired senior defense procurement officers, and Dr. Hannah Scott, who had agreed to serve as the independent liaison for our medical trauma tech division.

Every person in that room stood up the moment I walked through the door.

"Please, sit," I said, taking my place at the head of the Brazilian quartz table. The ugly mahogany nameplate Beckett had commissioned—*Beckett Carter, Managing Director*—was gone. In its place was a modest slate placard engraved with my father's motto: *Integrity in Innovation.*

"Colonel," began Dr. Robert Chen, my father’s longest-serving chief systems architect, his voice thick with emotion. "For two years, Beckett and his mother Mary turned our research division into an offshore laundering scheme. They diverted sixty percent of the Project Cerberus development budget into shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands under names like 'Blue Horizon Logistics' and 'Aegis Global Ventures.'"

Rachel set her leather briefcase on the table with a crisp click. She unlocked the dual latches and extracted a thick, tabbed binder bound in black buckram.

"That's only the surface, Robert," Rachel said, opening the binder and sliding copies down both sides of the table. "While the Eastern District US Attorney’s office was cataloging the assets seized from Tariq Al-Mansoor’s Gulfstream last night, forensic accountants from the Criminal Investigation Division decrypted a secondary server recovered from Carter-Sterling’s Tysons Corner office. It wasn’t just Beckett, Mary, and Donald Vance."

Marcus leaned forward, his combat-hardened eyes sweeping the room. "The Vance family didn't just want to steal Aegis. They had already pre-sold four zero-day vulnerability exploits in the Cerberus military network architecture to an unlisted intermediary based in Zurich."

A collective murmur of shock rippled through the veteran board members.

"Who was the buyer?" Dr. Chen asked, his hands balling into fists against the table. "Al-Mansoor was the cash mule, but who commissioned the breach?"

"A shell entity called *Vanguard Alpha Security*," I answered, tapping the black binder. "On paper, it’s an overseas private military contractor. But our signals intelligence team at Fort Belvoir traced the cryptocurrency escrow payments back to an encrypted satellite IP address operating out of an estate right here in McLean, Virginia."

The room went deathly silent.

"An estate owned by who?" asked Hannah Scott, her eyes wide.

"Victoria Vance-Sterling," Rachel said coldly. "Donald Vance’s younger sister, and Julian Sterling’s biological mother. The matriarch of the family Mary Carter desperately spent twenty years trying to impress."

I stood up, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Virginia corridor. Below us, traffic crawled along the Beltway—thousands of everyday people commuting home, unaware of the quiet wars fought to protect their security.

"Mary thought she was the puppet master," I said quietly, touching the faint, fading bruise on my neck beneath my tailored collar. "She believed that by orchestrating my institutionalization, she would secure her seat at the high table of Northern Virginia society. But Mary and Beckett were merely the disposable blunt instruments. Victoria Vance was the architect. She allowed Beckett to believe he was an untouchable venture capitalist while using him to create legal plausible deniability."

"And now that Beckett, Julian, and Donald are locked in federal holding cells, Victoria is moving her remaining assets," Marcus stated. "Detective Daniel Thompson called thirty minutes ago. Local Arlington police, working alongside the FBI’s financial crimes task force, intercepted an armored courier leaving the McLean estate at midday. Inside were three cold-storage hardware crypto wallets containing nearly eighty million dollars diverted from your father's original defense trust."

Dr. Chen exhaled a trembling breath. "Can we recover the code, Evelyn? If the Cerberus backdoor keys were exported onto those wallets..."

"They weren't exported," I replied, turning back to face my team with an unwavering gaze. "Because three weeks ago, on the very night I discovered that forged psychiatric file on Beckett’s laptop, I replaced the Cerberus master cryptographic keys with an active honey-pot tracer. Whoever tries to unlock those Zurich accounts using Beckett's stolen credentials will transmit their real-time biometric and location data directly to the Pentagon Cyber Command."

A slow, appreciative smile spread across Dr. Chen's face. "Your father taught you well."

"My father taught me that a soldier never leaves an open flank," I said. "This board meeting is formally called to order. Item number one: the immediate nullification of all Carter-Sterling contracts. Item number two: the full integration of Project Cerberus into the Department of Defense Special Access Program. And item number three..."

I paused, looking at Rachel.

"Item number three," Rachel announced, "the filing of civil RICO actions against every living member of the Vance dynasty, seizing every mansion, yacht, and offshore vehicle purchased with stolen Aegis capital."

Before anyone could second the motion, Marcus’s tactical phone vibrated against the quartz tabletop with a harsh, urgent buzz.

Marcus glanced at the display, his jaw tightening instantly. He answered, listened for ten seconds, and clicked off.

"Colonel," Marcus said, looking directly at me. "Beckett just requested an emergency audience with the federal prosecutor. He claims Mary is attempting to liquidate a safe-deposit box at the Old Dominion Bank in Alexandria that contains the original extortion tapes—and he wants to trade his mother's freedom for a reduced sentence."

I smoothed the lapel of my jacket. "Then let's go give my soon-to-be ex-husband the audience he's begging for."
