Chapter 7 - The Midnight Takedown

The storm reached peak fury at 1:15 AM.
Wind tore through the high-rise canyons along North Michigan Avenue, driving blinding sheets of freezing rain against the floor-to-ceiling glass of Samantha Hayes’s penthouse.
Inside, the lights were turned off. The only illumination came from the open safe in the primary dressing suite and the frantic glow of Samantha’s cell phone screen.
Luggage was strewn across the Italian marble floor. Two oversized Rimowa trunks sat gaping open, stuffed with designer furs, bundles of uncirculated hundred-dollar bills, three bearer bond certificates, and two fraudulent Cypriot passports she had purchased two years earlier as an exit strategy.
Samantha was on her hands and knees, frantically sweeping velvet jewelry trays into a leather duffel bag.
Her phone rang. The screen flashed BRENDAN.
She swiped decline without hesitating.
It rang again. BRENDAN.
She snarled, picking it up, stabbing the speaker button, and tossing it onto the bed. "Stop calling me, you idiot! I told you to stay away from me!"
Brendan’s voice came through the speaker, raspy, wet, and hysterical. He was shivering violently; the sound of traffic and sirens hummed in the background. "Samantha! Where are you?! They locked the Lake Forest gates! My mother collapsed at a motel on Cicero! I have eighty dollars cash in my wallet! You have to wire me funds from Solis Maritime!"
Samantha let out a cold, manic laugh as she jammed a diamond choker into the duffel bag. "Solis is dead, Brendan! Don't you get it? The feds froze the accounts six hours ago! Nora has every ledger! Your miserable, spineless little life is over!"
"You said you loved me!" Brendan cried out, his voice cracking into a ragged sob. "You said we’d take the money to Zurich! I gave you forty-two million dollars! I signed whatever you put in front of me!"
"You gave me that money because you're a vain, pathetic coward who couldn't stand being married to an actuary smarter than you!" Samantha screamed into the phone. "You signed those papers because you wanted an arm ornament while your sick brat drained your vanity! Don't pin this on me! You bought your own ticket to prison, Brendan!"
"Samantha, please—"
She snatched the phone, severed the call, and hurled it against the bedroom mirror. The glass shattered in an explosive spiderweb.
She zipped the duffel bag, grabbed the handle of the first Rimowa trunk, and rushed toward the private elevator foyer. Her private charter jet was fueled and waiting on a remote tarmac at Gary/Chicago International Airport. If she crossed into Mexican airspace before daybreak, the extradition treaty would take years to untangle.
She pressed the elevator call button.
The brass indicator clicked: PH.
The doors slid open.
Samantha froze.
Standing inside the elevator cab were four federal agents in tactical windbreakers, flanked by two uniformed Chicago police officers. At the front stood Assistant United States Attorney Marcus Gallagher, holding an active federal arrest warrant.
"Samantha Claire Hayes?" Gallagher asked, his voice cutting through the hum of the ventilation system.
Samantha took a step back, her knees trembling so violently that the duffel bag slipped from her fingers. Emeralds and pearls spilled across the marble floor, rolling toward the agents’ boots.
"This is private property," she stammered, her voice shrinking into a shrill whimper. "You have no right to be up here—"
"Federal warrant for interstate wire fraud, money laundering, grand larceny, and conspiracy," Gallagher announced, stepping out of the cab.
Before she could scream, two agents seized her arms, spun her around, and slammed her against the mirror wall. The cold steel of handcuffs snapped around her wrists with a sharp, sickening double-click.
"Get off me!" she shrieked, kicking wildly, her designer blouse tearing at the shoulder. "Call my lawyer! Call Senator Hayes! You don't know who my father is!"
"Your father released a public statement disowning your business holdings twenty minutes ago, Ms. Hayes," Gallagher replied coldly, stepping over her luggage. "And as for your lawyer—Mr. Klein just notified our office that your primary accomplice, Ximena Torres, completed a forty-page sworn deposition at the Marquette Building tonight."
Samantha’s face drained of every ounce of blood. Her jaw dropped.
"Ximena... gave you the files?"
"Every single line item," Gallagher said. "Including the audio note from Thursday afternoon where you instructed her to reject Chloe Fairchild’s cardiac catheterization so you could finalize the down payment on this penthouse."
He leaned in close, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.
"In the Northern District of Illinois, taking actions that deliberately induce the fatal decline of an infant during the commission of a federal felony carries a non-parole life sentence. Watch your head, Ms. Hayes."

As they dragged Samantha into the elevator in handcuffs, weeping and thrashing in terror, her diamond Cartier bracelet caught on the door frame. It snapped, scattering across the polished floor like cheap glass.
The elevator doors closed.
