Chapter 14 - The Vault of Clara

My fingers loosened. The Colt slipped from my sweat-slicked palm and clattered onto the debris-strewn rug.

"Kick it away," Victor instructed calmly.

I kicked the pistol toward him. It slid across the marble, stopping against the polished tip of his dress shoes. He didn't even look down at it. He simply raised his cane, gesturing toward the hidden entrance behind the library hearth, where two more mercenary operators had already breached the panel using hydraulic spreaders.

"Bring them up," Victor commanded into his lapel mic.

Thirty seconds later, the study doors opened.

Marcus was shoved into the room first, his face bruised, blood trickling from his split lip. Behind him, Margaret was supported by two heavily armed guards, her head held high despite the sheer exhaustion lining her aged face. And between them walked Lily.

She was crying silently, her shoulders trembling, her small fingers clutching Clara's tattered bear so hard the seams were ripping. When her eyes found mine, a choked, broken sob escaped her lips.

"Daddy..."

"I'm here, Lily," I said, stepping forward, but the operator behind me instantly jammed the cold muzzle of a rifle into the base of my skull. I froze, my teeth grinding so hard I could hear the enamel crack. "Don't you touch her, Victor. You have the estate. You have the debt. Leave the child out of this."

Victor walked slowly toward Lily. He ignored me entirely. He reached out with a leather-gloved finger and tilted Lily’s chin up. Lily shrank away, burying her face into her chest.

"Such exquisite symmetry," Victor whispered, studying her features with the cold calculation of an auctioneer examining a rare diamond. "She has her mother’s corneal structure. The biometric retinal key Clara installed in the Zurich vault requires living biological confirmation. A photograph won't do. A severed eye won't do. The neural pathways must be active, pulsing with blood."

Margaret let out a strangled cry. "You monster! She is four years old!"

"She is the key to forty billion dollars, Margaret," Victor said, turning his chilling gaze upon the matriarch. "Your idiot son Richard squandered my capital on failed real estate ventures and cocaine-fueled short positions. He thought he could outrun the Vance syndicate. Now, his niece will settle the ledger."

Victor pulled a sleek, silver handheld scanner from his coat pocket. The device hummed to life, projecting a soft blue grid across Lily’s face.

"No!" I roared, throwing my weight backward against the guard behind me.

My elbow slammed into his throat, throwing him off balance. I lunged toward Victor, but a second guard stepped in, driving the butt of his tactical shotgun directly into my solar plexus. The air exploded from my lungs. Pain flared across my ribs as I collapsed to my knees, gasping for breath, my vision swimming in gray static.

"Daddy!" Lily screamed, fighting against the iron grip of the soldier holding her. "Daddy, get up! Please get up!"

"Scan the child," Victor ordered coldly, stepping back. "Once the authentication transmits to Zurich, execute the adults. Clean the house. Make it look like an electrical fire caused by the storm."

The technician holding the blue-light scanner knelt before Lily, forcing her head upright.

"Daddy, why is it glowing?!" she shrieked, terror pitching her voice into a desperate wail. "Daddy!"

"Lily!" I choked out, blood pooling in my mouth as I dragged myself across the floor on my elbows, ignored by the guards who were raising their sidearms to our heads. "Remember what Mommy told you! The music box! Remember the song!"

The technician paused, his finger hovering over the scanner trigger. "What did he say?"

Victor’s eyes narrowed sharply. "Ignore him. Scan her!"

"The song, Lily!" I yelled with every remaining shred of breath in my torn lungs. "The song Mommy sang when you went to sleep!"

Lily looked down at the teddy bear in her arms. Her small, tear-stained face suddenly changed. The sheer panic in her hazel eyes gave way to a sudden, instinctive memory—the subconscious programming Clara had embedded into her every single night before she died.

Clara hadn't just used retinal markers. Clara was a world-class cryptographer before she married into this cursed dynasty.

Lily pressed her tiny thumb directly into the hard plastic eye of the ragged teddy bear.

A high-frequency digital tone chimed from inside the stuffed animal.

A split second later, the handheld scanner in the technician’s grip let out a shrill, shrieking alarm. The blue light instantly turned to a blinding, flashing crimson.

"Sir!" the technician shouted, dropping the device as it began to smoke and spark violently. "The cipher didn't open the vault! It triggered a reverse broadcast protocol!"
