Chapter 18 - The Viper in Velvet
The vault grew suffocatingly silent.
Julian reacted instantly, shifting his stance to shield me, his hand dipping inside his jacket. But the two security guards behind the stranger raised silenced automatic pistols, trained directly at Julian’s chest.
"I wouldn't advise that, American," the stranger said smoothly, not even blinking. "Julian Vance, isn't it? The disgraced corporate attorney who found a second life acting as my little cousin’s attack dog. A tragic end for a man with your pedigree, dying in a sewer under London."
"And you must be Charles Sterling," I said, stepping past Julian so that I stood face-to-face with the man who claimed to be my cousin. My voice did not shake. Meadowgate had taught me how to face hyenas. "Lady Eleanor’s golden boy. The one who lost two hundred million pounds shorting crude oil last winter and had to raid the family charitable trust to stay out of Belmarsh prison."
Charles’s arrogant smirk flickered for a fraction of a second. "You’ve done your homework. But knowledge without leverage is just trivia, Ivy. You’re sixty feet underground. Mr. Pendelton has already been... retired for the evening. If an accidental gas leak occurs down here, the floodgates open automatically. The papers tomorrow will simply report that the tragic American heiress drowned in an abandoned Victorian sewer."
"Is that the best Lady Eleanor could come up with?" I asked, walking calmly toward the mahogany table. "Murder in the dark? Just like your father did when he poisoned my grandfather’s mind against Thomas?"
"My father built this empire!" Charles snapped, his aristocratic composure cracking. "Your father ran away to America to play builder in the dirt! He was weak!"
"My father built an empire with his bare hands while your family lived like leeches off this vault," I said, picking up the crimson velvet folder. "Do you know what’s in this book, Charles?"
"It doesn't matter. It’s burning with you."
"It’s the 1985 forensic audit of the Sussex-London Syndicate," I replied, holding it up so the flashlight caught the wax seals. "Signed by your father. But more importantly, Julian’s team established a cloud-synced optical link the second we entered this room. The biometric scanner on my watch has been transmitting a continuous ultra-high-frequency feed directly to the London Metropolitan Police’s Serious Fraud Office and the Swiss Federal Prosecutor since we breached the perimeter."
Charles froze. "You’re bluffing."
"Am I?" I gave him a cold, amused smile. "You think I came all the way across the Atlantic without knowing that Eleanor had our hotel surveilled? I knew you were following us from the moment the black Jaguar picked us up on Carlos Place. Why do you think Pendelton let you down the stairs so easily?"
Right on cue, a shrill, piercing siren echoed down the spiral stone staircase.
Heavy, tactical boots thundered against the granite steps above. Shouts in crisp, authoritative British accents rang out: *"Armed Police! Stand down! Lower your weapons!"*
Charles’s face drained of every drop of blood. "You... you brought Scotland Yard to the private family vault?!"
"No," Julian said with a deadly grin, pulling out his badge of international legal counsel. "We brought the Serious Fraud Office. You see, Charles, attempting to murder the controlling shareholder of a registered FTSE 100 enterprise while trying to conceal forty years of systematic asset stripping carries a mandatory twenty-year sentence. And that’s before we talk about your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands."
The two armed guards panicked, tossing their weapons onto the damp stone floor and raising their hands.
A squad of Metropolitan Tactical Firearms officers poured into the vault entrance, their submachine guns aimed squarely at Charles.
"Charles Sterling," the lead detective announced, stepping forward with handcuffs glinting under the lights. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, and aggravated corporate fraud. You do not have to say anything, but it may harm your defense if you fail to mention when questioned..."
As the cold steel snapped around Charles’s wrists, he thrashed violently, glaring at me with raw, venomous hatred.
"My mother will crush you, Ivy!" he spat, saliva flying from his lips. "She owns the courts! She owns the press! Tomorrow night is the Royal Midsummer Gala at Claridge's! She will have you deported as an illegal claimant before you can even file the injunction!"
I walked up to him, close enough to smell the expensive cologne turned sour with sweat.
I reached out and adjusted the lapel of his ruined designer coat.

"Tell your mother," I whispered into his ear, "to save a seat for me at her table. Because tomorrow night, I’m not just coming to dinner. I’m presenting the bill."
