Chapter 6 - The Fall of an Empire
I leaned into the microphone.
“The woman Camille Laurent scalded,” I said, my voice cutting through the stunned silence like an obsidian blade, “is sitting right here.”
Every camera lens in the auditorium swung simultaneously toward Elena.
Elena did not flinch. With slow, dignified precision, she reached up with her right hand and unbuttoned the left cuff of her Dior jacket. She slid the sleeve up to her elbow.
Beneath the silk, the silver medical mesh was clearly visible. Dr. Henderson had signed the outer seal with his medical registry number.
A collective intake of breath swept through the room.
Derek Cole from *Manhattan Daily* slowly stood up. His face was flushed with embarrassment and rage at having been used as an unwitting pawn in Camille’s fraud.
“Miss Laurent,” Cole said, his voice shaking with fury as he pointed his microphone at her. “Did you fabricate your assault allegations to conceal your own criminal violence against an employee?”
Camille didn't answer. She couldn't. Her chest heaved, her hands clutching at the edges of the desk.
“Mr. Vance,” another reporter shouted, jumping to her feet. “Will you be pressing charges?”
“I do not need to press charges,” I answered smoothly. “The District Attorney of New York County was provided with these files at 6:30 this morning. An arrest warrant for felony aggravated assault and filing a false police report was signed forty-five minutes ago.”
Right on cue, the heavy double doors at the back of the auditorium opened.
Four uniformed officers of the New York City Police Department, accompanied by two detectives in plain clothes, walked down the center aisle. The reporters parted like the Red Sea.
Camille scrambled out of her chair, backing away toward the stage curtains. “No! Get away from me! Do you know who I am? My father is Senator Laurent! You cannot touch me!”
The lead detective, a veteran named Miller, stepped onto the stage without breaking stride. He produced a set of steel handcuffs from his belt.
“Camille Laurent,” Miller said loudly enough for every microphone to catch. “You are under arrest for assault in the second degree, reckless endangerment, and fabrication of evidence. You have the right to remain silent.”
“Gabriel!” Camille screamed, her voice dissolving into pure, unadulterated madness as Miller twisted her arms behind her back. “Gabriel, tell them! Tell them it was an accident! You promised you would marry me! You promised!”
I didn't answer her. I didn't even look at her.
The handcuffs clicked shut with a sharp, metallic finality that resonated through the room.
As they dragged Camille down the center aisle, her designer shoes skidding across the carpet, the photographers surged forward, capturing every second of her disgrace. The images of Camille Laurent being led away in irons would be on the front page of every newspaper on Earth within the hour.
The noise reached a fever pitch. Reporters were shouting questions over one another, demanding statements, market forecasts, and details about the severed engagement.
I raised my right hand.
The room silenced instantly.
“There is one more matter,” I said.
I turned to Elena and offered my hand. She placed her fingers in mine and stood beside me.
“For three years,” I addressed the press corps, “the Vance Foundation has operated without a permanent executive director. We have focused on corporate philanthropy, but we have lacked a leader who understands the human cost of corporate arrogance.”
I looked down at Elena. Her eyes were bright, clear, and steady.
“Effective immediately, Elena Vance will assume the role of Executive Director of the Vance Foundation, backed by an initial endowment of two hundred and fifty million dollars dedicated to protecting domestic workers, service staff, and labor abuse victims across the state of New York.”
A stunned murmur rippled through the room.
“Mr. Vance!” a reporter from the *Wall Street Journal* called out. “Did you say Elena *Vance*? What is her relationship to you?”
I looked straight into the central broadcast camera.
“She bears my name because as of this morning, she is under the full legal and personal protection of my house,” I stated without hesitation. “And anyone who attempts to challenge her authority, smear her reputation, or threaten her safety will find themselves facing the full weight of Vance Capital.”
I lowered the microphone.
“We will take no questions.”
I guided Elena off the stage, leaving behind the roaring chaos of the global press corps.
Behind the heavy velvet curtains, the noise faded into a muffled roar. Elena stopped walking. She turned to me, her breath coming in shallow gasps as the adrenaline of the last two hours finally began to recede.
“Elena Vance?” she whispered, staring at me. “Gabriel… what did you just do?”
“I changed the board,” I said quietly. “Camille wanted to use my name to destroy lives. I am using it to rebuild yours.”
She looked at me, her eyes swimming with unshed tears, and for the first time, she did not look away.
“You don't even know my real story, Gabriel,” she said softly.

“Then tell me,” I replied. “Over breakfast.”
