Chapter 8 - The Wolf at the Gate

By five o'clock in the morning, the Caldwell mansion had been transformed into an operational trap.

Ethan had summoned his private executive security detail—not the standard gate guards, but four former federal marshals who managed Caldwell Global’s overseas security. They were men in unmarked black tactical gear, armed with concealed sidearms and encrypted earpieces, moving like ghosts through the shadows of the estate.

Margaret was locked inside the temperature-controlled, steel-reinforced security cellar beneath the kitchen pantry, her phone confiscated, her access codes revoked.

Upstairs, Noah had finally woken up.

The sun was just beginning to crest the horizon, painting the sky in pale shades of rose and gold. Noah was sitting up in bed, rubbing his eyes, looking around the room.

“Claire?” he whispered as I walked in carrying a tray of scrambled eggs, fresh strawberries, and whole-wheat toast.

“Good morning, hero,” I said, setting the tray across his lap.

Noah looked down at his legs under the comforter. Then he looked up at me, his eyes wide with sheer wonder.

“Claire... look.”

He slowly pulled back the sheet.

His feet were moving.

He was flexing his ankles. Up and down. Up and down.

For the first time in four years, the synthetic paralytic had almost entirely cleared his bloodstream. His motor cortex was firing signals to his calves, and his muscles, uninhibited by dantrolene, were responding without the agonizing, tearing spasms that had tormented his childhood.

“It doesn't hurt,” Noah whispered, a tear spilling over his lower lid and tracking through the freckles on his cheek. “Claire... my legs don't feel like they’re burning anymore.”

I sat on the edge of the mattress, my own throat tight with emotion. I placed my hands over his feet, feeling the genuine, biological resistance as he pushed against my palms.

“That’s because you’re strong, Noah,” I whispered, brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead. “You were always strong. Someone was just giving you bad medicine that made your muscles sleepy.”

“Is Mrs. Hargrove mad at me?” he asked suddenly, his voice dropping into a nervous whisper. “Because I walked yesterday?”

The door opened softly, and Ethan stepped into the room.

He had showered and changed into a fresh charcoal suit, but he hadn't shaved. The dark stubble on his jaw gave him a dangerous, feral edge. When he saw Noah moving his toes, when he saw the clear, unclouded brightness in his son’s eyes, Ethan stopped dead in his tracks.

“Dad!” Noah beamed. “Look! Look at my toes! They aren't cramping!”

Ethan walked slowly toward the bed. He dropped to his knees beside the mattress, burying his face in Noah’s small chest, wrapping his arms around his son with a fierce, trembling desperation that made Noah giggle.

“Dad, you’re tickling me with your beard!”

“I know, buddy,” Ethan choked out, his voice thick with tears he refused to let fall. “I know. You’re doing amazing. You’re the strongest boy in the world.”

Ethan looked up at me over Noah’s shoulder. The gratitude in his eyes was overwhelming, but behind it lay an iron wall of resolve.

“He’s at the gate,” Ethan said quietly.

My stomach flipped. “Vance?”

Ethan nodded, standing up and smoothing down the front of his suit. “His Mercedes just cleared the outer security checkpoint. He’s driving up the main avenue right now.”

Ethan looked down at Noah. “Noah, I need you to do something very important for me. Can you stay right here with Claire? No matter what you hear downstairs, no matter how loud it gets, you stay in this bed with Claire. Can you do that for me?”

Noah nodded solemnly, sensing the gravity in his father’s voice. “I promise, Dad.”

Ethan leaned down, kissed Noah’s forehead, and then turned toward me.

May you like

“Claire,” Ethan said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper as he reached the door. “Keep him safe. The security team has the perimeter locked down. But Vance doesn't leave this house in handcuffs until he signs a full confession.”
