Chapter 10 - Shadows Over Chicago
For three days, Safehouse 9 became the command center of a silent, invisible war.
Julian came and went under cover of darkness, carrying encrypted hard drives, surveillance logs, and tactical gear. Every hour, another piece of Victor Marcone’s empire crumbled.
A shipping warehouse on the South Side caught fire.
Two offshore bank accounts in the Cayman Islands were seized by federal regulators tipped off by anonymous Voss leaks.
A corrupt alderman who had protected Marcone for a decade abruptly resigned from office, citing “health reasons,” after Adrian paid a ten-minute visit to his penthouse.
And through it all, I stayed beside Adrian.
I wasn't housekeeping anymore. I sat at the kitchen island, cross-referencing shipping manifests and identifying supply patterns. It turned out that six years of balancing three jobs and managing household budgets gave me an uncanny ability to spot discrepancies in financial ledgers.
“Look at this,” I said on Friday afternoon, tapping the screen of Adrian’s tablet.
Adrian stepped behind my chair, resting one hand on the counter beside me, his chest pressing lightly against my shoulder. The proximity made it damn near impossible to concentrate, but I forced my finger to stay steady.
“What am I looking at?” he asked, his voice low in my ear.
“Pier 42,” I said. “Marcone has five container ships cleared for fruit delivery over the weekend. But look at the tare weight. The containers are thirty percent heavier than standard refrigerated units carrying bananas.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “Weapons.”
“Heavy military-grade hardware,” Julian chimed in from the doorway, looking up from his phone with a wolfish grin. “He’s bringing in reinforcements. He knows he’s losing the territory, so he’s arming every foot soldier from here to Milwaukee.”
Adrian straightened up, a cold, predatory smile touching his lips. “When does the shipment clear customs?”
“Tomorrow midnight,” Julian said.
“Cancel our dinner plans,” Adrian replied, his eyes dropping to mine, glowing with dark triumph. “We’re going to the docks.”
“Wait,” I stood up, panic flaring in my chest. “*We’re* going? Adrian, no. That’s a war zone! You can’t take me there!”
Adrian reached out, catching my chin between his thumb and forefinger, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that brooked no argument.

“You’re the one who found the shipment, Maya,” he murmured. “And after tonight, Marcone will know that the woman he tried to use as a pawn is the queen who took his king.”
