Chapter 17 - Choosing to Stay

That night, the compound was quiet for the first time in months.

The war was over. The Rossi syndicate had been dismantled in a single night of surgical precision. Sofia Rossi was on a cargo ship heading toward an undisclosed black site in South America, never to be heard from again.

The ghost of Elena had finally been put to rest.

I stood in my private bedroom on the third floor, packing my clothes into a single worn duffel bag.

The hospital debts were gone. My childhood home was legally mine. A trust fund awaited me that could buy anything I ever desired. My job was finished—Leo was talking, laughing, thriving, and safe.

I had done what I came to do.

A knock sounded at the door.

It opened before I could answer. Ricardo stood on the threshold.

He looked at the open duffel bag on the bed, then at me. The color drained from his face.

"What are you doing?" he asked, his voice shaking with a fear he had never shown in front of assassins or rival dons.

"My contract was to protect Leo until the threat was eliminated," I said softly, folding a sweater. "The threat is gone, Ricardo. You have your territory back. You don't need a bodyguard anymore."

"I don't need a bodyguard," he took a step into the room, his eyes wild, desperate. "I never needed a bodyguard."

"Ricardo..."

"Don't do this, Clara," he pleaded, closing the distance between us. He grabbed my wrists, not with force, but with a desperate, trembling gentleness. "Do not leave me."

"I am a civilian from Brooklyn, Ricardo," I whispered, tears blinding my eyes. "Your world is blood, war, and shadows. Every time a car backfires, my heart stops. Every time you leave the house, I wonder if you will come back in a body bag. I can't lose another person I love. I won't survive it."

The word hung in the air between us like a confession.

*Love.*

Ricardo froze. His breath hitched.

"You love me?" he asked, his voice barely a whisper.

"Of course I love you, you idiot!" I cried, the tears spilling over my cheeks. "I love the way you look at your son. I love the way you protected me. I love that beneath this monster the world sees, there is a man who would burn the world down just to keep his family warm! But I am terrified!"

Ricardo didn't speak.

He dropped to his knees.

The King of New York, the man who made senators tremble and crime bosses plead for mercy, knelt on the floor before me. He wrapped his arms around my waist, burying his face into my stomach, his broad shoulders shaking with silent sobs.

"Then let me protect you from the terror," he begged against my sweater. "I will leave the Commission. I will put the businesses into blind trusts. I will walk away from the streets. I don't care about the empire, Clara. Without you and Leo, it's just a pile of ashes."

He looked up at me, his handsome face wet with tears, completely bare, completely vulnerable.

"Don't leave us in the dark again," he whispered. "We need your light."

Before I could answer, a small set of footsteps padded across the hardwood.

Leo stood in the doorway, dragging his favorite stuffed bear, rubbing his sleepy eyes.

"Mama?" he whimpered, seeing Ricardo on his knees. "Why is Papa crying? Did he get a scrape?"

My heart shattered into a million pieces—and in that moment, it remade itself, stronger, fiercer, and whole.

I knelt down on the floor, pulling Ricardo's face toward mine, and pressed my lips against his in a deep, desperate, all-consuming kiss.

He gasped against my mouth, his hands tangling in my hair, pulling me against his chest with a ferocious, starving hunger. It was a promise sealed in tears and blood.

I pulled back, breathless, and looked at Leo.

"Papa doesn't have a scrape, sweetheart," I smiled through my tears, holding out an arm for the little boy. "Papa was just asking Mama to stay forever."

Leo squealed with joy, running across the room and leaping into our arms.

We collapsed into a heap on the rug, the three of us tangled together—a broken father, a grieving mother, and an orphaned child who had forged a family from the ruins of tragedy.
