Chapter 20 - The Horizon Ahead

By noon, the grand study of Blackwood Manor was completely transformed.

The ostentatious mahogany desk had been removed and replaced with her father’s original partner’s desk—a massive, elegant piece of English walnut that had been kept in storage in a climate-controlled warehouse in Brooklyn for over a decade.

The leather-bound ledgers of the Bellamy Compact lined the floor-to-ceiling shelves. On the wall behind the desk hung the restored portrait of Samuel Bellamy, his sharp blue eyes looking out over the room with quiet pride.

Nora sat behind the desk, a leather-bound journal open before her.

Dennis Crowley entered, standing at attention before the desk. "Miss Bellamy."

"Yes, Dennis?"

"A courier arrived from Washington ten minutes ago. A private diplomatic pouch from the Department of State."

He laid a heavy, sealed parchment envelope on the walnut surface. The wax seal bore the crest of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

Nora looked at the seal.

"It seems Victor’s friends are nervous," Nora remarked softly.

"Should I have Julian assemble the security team for a trip to the capital?" Dennis asked, his hand resting instinctively on his holster.

Nora reached for an antique ivory letter opener, slicing cleanly through the thick parchment. She extracted a single sheet of heavy cream paper, reading the brief, handwritten note inscribed upon it.

*Miss Bellamy,*

*Your father’s debts have been settled in blood and ledger. But the board upon which he played was far larger than the Atlantic coast. If you wish to retain control of the transatlantic channels, we request your presence at the Metropolitan Club on the first of next month. Come alone, or come with an army. The choice is yours.*

Nora read the note twice. Then, she held the corner of the paper over the small brass candle burning beside her inkwell.

The flame caught, the yellow fire consuming the words, turning the parchment to black, curling ash that dropped harmlessly into the stone tray.

She looked up at Dennis, her blue eyes bright, clear, and utterly fearless.

"Tell Julian we won't be needing an army," Nora said, her voice filled with the quiet, triumphant certainty of a woman who had reclaimed her kingdom from the ashes of betrayal. "Tell him we only need our ledger. After all... we still have a great deal of history left to write."

Outside, the horn of an outbound Bellamy cargo ship echoed across the sound—a deep, resonant roar that announced to the coast, to the city, and to the world that the queen was in her counting-house, and her reign had only just begun.
