Chapter 20 - The Heir of the Vale

The private suite at Northwestern Memorial Hospital was filled with the early morning light of a Sunday dawn.

The rain had vanished, leaving behind a sky of brilliant sapphire over the calm blue waters of Lake Michigan.

On the wide bed, propped up against a mountain of white pillows, lay Sophia.

Her face was flushed, her auburn hair damp with sweat, her eyes half-closed with absolute exhaustion—and radiant with a beauty that took Dominic’s breath away.

In her arms rested a bundle of soft pink flannel.

A full head of dark, raven hair, porcelain skin, and tiny rosebud lips that pursed as she slept.

Dominic sat on the edge of the mattress, his tailored suit completely discarded, wearing only a wrinkled white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up.

His large, calloused hands, which had commanded armies of men and held the fates of empires, were trembling as he gently stroked the baby’s impossibly soft cheek with the tip of his pinky finger.

“She looks like you,” Sophia whispered, her voice weak but brimming with love.

“God help her if she has my temper,” Dominic choked out, his throat burning with tears he didn't bother to wipe away.

The baby stirred, letting out a soft, kitten-like whimper, her tiny fingers reaching out from the blanket until they wrapped around Dominic’s index finger.

Her grip was surprisingly strong.

Dominic leaned down, pressing his forehead against Sophia’s temple, his eyes locked onto the miracle resting between them.

“What will we name her?” he murmured.

Sophia looked out the window, at the bright morning light illuminating the city that had once felt like a prison, and had now become their sanctuary.

“Claire,” she said softly. “Claire Eleanor Vale. It means light.”

Dominic smiled—a smile so pure, so full of peace, that it erased every scar on his face.

“Claire,” he repeated, tasting the name like a sacred prayer. “Welcome home, my little light.”

A quiet knock sounded at the door.

Eleanor stepped in, leaning lightly on her silver cane, followed by Caleb, who carried an immense basket of fresh white roses.

The matriarch stopped at the foot of the bed, her sharp eyes softening until they filled with tears as she looked at the newest generation of their bloodline.

“A girl,” Eleanor whispered, stepping forward to touch the baby’s blanket. “A true queen.”

Dominic didn't look at his mother, nor at Caleb, nor at the empire waiting for his command outside the hospital walls.

He leaned down and kissed Sophia’s lips—a slow, tender, infinitely deep kiss that carried every battle they had fought, every fear they had conquered, and every promise of the future they were about to write.

“I love you, Sophia,” Dominic whispered against her skin, his hand covering both hers and their daughter’s. “Through every storm, through every shadow, until my last breath.”

Sophia smiled, closing her eyes as she drifted into a peaceful, protected sleep, knowing that the man beside her would stand between her and the world forever.

Down on Michigan Avenue, the city moved forward under the golden sun.

The shadows had been cleared.

The family was whole.

And somewhere in the quiet corridors of the private hospital, a new chapter was waiting to be written...
