Chapter 10 - Sanctuary in the Foothills

Thirty miles to the northwest, nestled in the pine-covered foothills outside Boulder, Caroline stood on the wraparound flagstone terrace of her late grandmother’s estate, *Highland Hearth.*

The historic stone house had belonged to the Sterling family for eighty years. It was built of native river rock and heavy hand-hewn timbers, overlooking a panoramic sweep of the Flatirons. Here, the air was crisp, smelling of juniper and clean woodsmoke.

Caroline wore a long, cream wool cardigan over a soft knit maternity dress. Her color had returned. The dark circles beneath her eyes had faded, replaced by the serene, protective glow of an expectant mother who had finally reached safety.

Beside her on the stone parapet sat Eleanor, sipping hot cider from a ceramic mug.

The glass doors slid open, and Chloe walked out onto the terrace, holding a folder under her arm. She was wearing snow boots and jeans, having shed her corporate armor the moment she left Denver.

“It’s done,” Chloe said, leaning against the railing next to Caroline.

Caroline looked out over the vast expanse of white pines. “Did he sign?”

“Every single page,” Chloe replied. “Hayes Crest has been placed into voluntary receivership. Dad’s investment group purchased the Highlands project for thirty-five million dollars this afternoon. Every contractor will be paid in full on Monday. The company name has already been dissolved. The new entity is registered as *Haven Ridge Development Corp.*”

Caroline turned, surprised. “Haven Ridge?”

“Dad insisted,” Chloe smiled warmly. “He said the homes built under that banner should carry the name of the woman who actually had the courage to finish them. You are the sixty percent majority shareholder, Caroline. Whenever you’re ready to return—whether that’s in six months or two years—you will be running the largest mixed-income residential development in the state.”

Caroline felt a strange, light sensation in her chest—a weight she hadn't realized she had been carrying for nine years suddenly evaporating into the mountain air.

She had spent so long building a pedestal for Graham to stand on, believing that a good wife’s duty was to elevate her husband. She had minimized her own inheritance, her own business acumen, her own instincts, just to protect his fragile male pride.

And now, the pedestal was gone. And she was still standing.

“And Brooke?” Eleanor asked quietly from her chair, her voice steady.

“Brooke Sutton was denied bail at two o’clock,” Chloe said, looking at Eleanor with deep respect. “Her father refused to fly in from Chicago to post bond. She’s currently sitting in the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility awaiting a preliminary hearing on four felony counts. The DA informed me that with the evidence Marcus provided, she’s looking at a minimum of seven years.”

Eleanor took a slow sip of her cider, looking at the distant mountains. “God have mercy on her soul. Because justice certainly won’t.”

A gentle wind stirred the tops of the pines, scattering a shower of sparkling snow dust into the sunlight.

Caroline rested both hands over her stomach. Inside, Grace gave a soft, rolling turn—no longer frantic or sharp, but calm and rhythmic.

“Thirty-two weeks today,” Caroline murmured, looking down at the prominent swell of her dress.

“Eight more weeks,” Chloe said softly, placing an arm around Caroline’s shoulders. “Eight weeks to rest, breathe, and prepare for the greatest adventure of your life.”

Caroline looked out at the horizon, where the jagged peaks of the Rockies pierced the clear blue sky.

The road behind her was littered with the ruins of a broken home, a shattered marriage, and a betrayal that had cut to the marrow of her soul. But looking forward, across the wide, untamed beauty of the mountains, she saw no ruins.

She saw a sanctuary.

She saw a daughter who would grow up knowing that a woman’s worth is never determined by the loyalty of a weak man.

“Eight weeks,” Caroline said, her voice rich with a quiet, unshakeable power. “We’ll be ready.”
