Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Formula
By nightfall, Victor’s private compound in Lake Geneva was humming with lethal activity.
The penthouse on Lake Shore Drive had been declared a hazmat zone, but the failed assassination had only accelerated Victor’s counterstrike. He had brought me to his private estate—a heavily guarded fortress surrounded by dense pine forests and electric fences.
Deep in the compound’s lower level lay a fully operational private laboratory. It had originally been built to monitor Victor’s rare blood disorder—a chronic deficiency in plasma cholinesterase that he had kept secret from the underworld for a decade.
"If Vance knew about my enzyme deficiency," Victor said, standing beside me as I adjusted the lenses of an electronic microscope, "then he knew this poison was tailored specifically for me. Even a minute exposure that an ordinary man might survive would shut down my heart permanently."
I adjusted the focus on the blood sample we had extracted from Armand’s system.
"It's worse than that," I said, my eyes glued to the display monitor. "Look at the molecular lattice. The organophosphate isn't just binding to the receptors; it’s bonded with a synthetic peptide carrier. This isn't crude street chemistry, Victor. This formula was designed by Dr. Julian Ross."
Victor went dead still. "Ross was the chief chemist at Apex BioPharm. He vanished four years ago after embezzling three million dollars."
"He didn't vanish," I said, my voice shaking with sudden emotion as I pointed to a tiny synthetic marker on the protein chain. "He went to work for Vincent Morretti. And he used my father's stolen freight lines to smuggle the raw precursor compounds from China through the Great Lakes ports."
Victor stepped behind me, his hands resting gently on my shoulders. His touch was heavy, grounding, radiating a calm authority that chased away the ghosts of my past.
"Your father wasn't just framed to destroy a competitor, Molly," Victor murmured, his lips close to my ear. "Morretti needed Higgins Trucking because your father’s routes bypassed federal agricultural checkpoints. Your father died defending his integrity. And you... you are going to help me destroy the men who broke him."
I turned around on my swivel stool, finding myself trapped within the circle of Victor’s arms. He didn't move away. He looked down at me with an intensity that made the room feel suddenly devoid of oxygen.
"How do we stop them?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.
"Tonight, Morretti and Vance are hosting a private auction at the Drake Hotel," Victor said. "They believe I am dead. Vance’s men reported that the penthouse was flooded with cyclosarin and that no one emerged alive. Morretti is preparing to announce the merger of our port territories under his control, backed by a consortium of international buyers who are purchasing the rights to this new chemical weapon."
"You're going to crash the auction," I realized, my pulse accelerating.
"We are going to crash it," Victor corrected. "Vance holds the digital ledger containing the chemical formulas, the shipping manifests, and the encrypted accounts that prove your father was framed. But the ledger is bio-locked. It requires a biochemical bypass—a counter-agent introduced directly into the server hub located in the Drake's private vault."
I stared at him in disbelief. "You need me to synthesize the neutralizing key."
"I need you to synthesize it," Victor said. "And then, I need you to walk into the Drake Hotel on my arm."
My breath caught in my throat. I looked down at my baggy, borrowed clothes, feeling a wave of familiar shame wash over me.
"Victor... look at me. I'm a size-eighteen waitress. I don't belong at a luxury gala with billionaires and high-society criminals. Everyone will laugh at you. They'll look at me and wonder why Victor Hastings brought a fat, clumsy girl to the most important night of his life."
Victor’s jaw tightened. He leaned down, placing his hands firmly on my hips, pulling me forward until my body pressed against his.
"Never say that again," he commanded, his voice dark, fierce, and utterly sincere. "You see yourself through the eyes of fools who measure worth by empty superficiality. I see a woman who saved my life twice without flinching. I see a brilliant mind that outsmarted the deadliest assassins in this city. And when I look at you, Molly Higgins..."
He paused, his eyes sweeping over the curve of my lips, the fullness of my breasts, and the soft, beautiful shape of my waist.
"...I see the most captivating woman who has ever crossed my path. Tonight, you will not hide. You will stand beside me like the queen you are."
Tears pricked the corners of my eyes, but for the first time in my life, they weren't tears of shame.
They were tears of fire.

"Give me two hours," I said, turning back to the lab bench with a fierce determination burning in my chest. "I’ll build your key. And then we take back everything they stole from my father."
