Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

By sunrise, St. Matthew’s Hospital was surrounded by yellow crime scene tape, state troopers, and satellite broadcast vans from every major news network in the state.

The story was exploding across the internet like wildfire.

A Facebook post created by an anonymous pediatric nurse—showing an image of Dr. Cole standing guard outside my room, accompanied by an audio snippet of Richard boasting about his untouchability—had garnered over three million shares in less than eight hours. The hashtag **#JusticeForEmily** was trending worldwide.

Richard Halston was no longer a philanthropist. He was a monster cornered in the public square.

At 8:00 AM, Richard attempted to hold an emergency press conference on the steps of his corporate headquarters in downtown. Flanked by four PR handlers, he stood at a bank of microphones, wearing a crisp dark suit and an expression of manufactured grief.

“Members of the press,” Richard began, his voice projecting calm authority. “The scurrilous allegations circulating online are nothing more than a targeted smear campaign orchestrated by business competitors seeking to undermine Halston Construction’s city infrastructure bids. My stepdaughter is a deeply troubled adolescent with a history of self-harm and psychological instability. My wife has succumbed to emotional exhaustion. I love my family, and I will vigorously defend my name—”

“Mr. Halston!” a reporter shouted, thrusting a microphone forward. “How do you respond to the toxicology reports unsealed this morning regarding David Vance’s exhumation order?”

Richard’s face twitched. “What are you talking about?”

A convoy of black SUVs pulled abruptly onto the sidewalk, cutting off the press conference.

Twelve federal agents wearing windbreakers emblazoned with **FBI** and **IRS CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION** stepped out, led by Special Agent Marcus Vance—Detective Vance’s older brother.

Agent Vance marched up the granite steps, unrolling a federal arrest warrant.

“Richard Halston,” Agent Vance announced through a megaphone, his voice booming across the plaza and directly into the live broadcast cameras. “Under a warrant issued by the United States District Court, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, witness tampering, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.”

Richard’s PR team backed away from him as if he had caught fire.

“This is an outrage!” Richard shouted, stepping back. “Arthur! Call Judge Sterling immediately!”

“Judge Sterling won’t be answering, Richard,” Agent Vance said, producing a pair of steel handcuffs. “Sterling was taken into federal custody twenty minutes ago at his private residence. He’s already singing like a canary regarding the fifty-thousand-dollar bribes you wired to his offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands.”

Richard went completely pale. The invincible fortress he had built with money, intimidation, and political favors was collapsing in real time on national television.

He spun around to flee into his building, but two federal agents stepped into the glass doorway, blocking his path with raised tasers.

Agent Vance grabbed Richard’s arm, shoved him against the marble pillar of his own headquarters, and twisted his wrists behind his back.

*Click. Clack.*

The handcuffs snapped shut.

A reporter thrust a camera right into Richard’s twisted face. “Any words for Emily, Mr. Halston?”

Richard bared his teeth, his eyes filled with the feral madness of a predator stripped of his claws. “She’s nothing!” he screamed into the lens, his composure entirely gone. “She’s a worthless little parasite! I should have finished her four months ago!”

The camera transmitted his words directly to millions of screens across the country.

In my hospital room, watching the television screen, I let out a long, trembling breath. Dr. Cole gently reached over and switched the television off.

“It’s over, Emily,” he said softly.

“Not yet,” Claire Montgomery said, entering the room with a thick stack of court documents. “The preliminary hearing is in three weeks. We have to make sure he never, ever sees the light of day again.”
