Chapter 5 - The Eviction

At 7:00 AM the following morning, the mist over the Hudson Valley had burned away, leaving a crisp, brilliant autumn sky.

The wrought-iron gates of the Vance country estate—an eight-acre sprawling property featuring a twenty-room limestone mansion, manicured English gardens, and a heated equestrian barn—swung open with a sharp hydraulic groan.

Evelyn Vance sat in the sunroom in a silk robe, a half-empty cup of Earl Grey tea shivering in her hands. Chloe was curled up on the chaise lounge, swollen-eyed, frantically scrolling through Twitter and Instagram, where Julian’s arrest was trending globally at number one under the hashtag #BillionaireWifeRevenge.

"They're calling us grifters, Mother," Chloe wept, her voice trembling. "They've posted my sorority pictures. My friends are blocking me. The country club cancelled our membership at midnight!"

"Be quiet, Chloe!" Evelyn snapped, though her own voice was brittle with hysteria. "Julian's lawyers will have him out on bail by noon. He will explain that this was a civil dispute, a bitter divorce maneuver by that vile, calculating girl. The judge will dismiss it. We still have the house. We still have our name!"

The heavy mahogany double doors of the estate slammed open without a knock.

Evelyn gasped, standing up so fast her tea spilled over the imported Persian rug. "Who dares enter this house without—"

She stopped dead.

Walking into the marble rotunda were six uniformed county sheriff’s deputies, accompanied by a woman in a sharp gray pantsuit carrying a stack of legal folders.

Behind them walked Arthur Vance, holding a set of master keys.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Evelyn demanded, marching into the rotunda, tying her silk robe tighter around her waist. "This is private property! Get out before I have my son sue your entire department!"

The woman in the gray suit stepped forward, pulling a court order from the top of her stack.

"Mrs. Evelyn Vance? Miss Chloe Vance?" the woman asked crisply.

"I am Mrs. Vance," Evelyn spat. "And you are trespassing!"

"I am Sarah Lin, senior legal counsel for Sterling Holdings LLC," the woman replied with lethal professionalism. "I am here to execute an immediate Order of Eviction and Asset Sequestration issued by the New York Supreme Court at 5:30 this morning."

Evelyn’s face turned the color of chalk. "Eviction? Don't be ridiculous! This is my family's ancestral home! Julian's father bought this estate thirty years ago!"

"Correction, Mrs. Vance," Sarah Lin said, turning a page. "Julian’s father mortgaged this estate to the hilt twenty-five years ago. It was foreclosed on in 2018. Sterling Investment Group purchased the underlying deed, cleared the tax liens, and leased it back to Vance Enterprises for a nominal fee of one dollar per year, under the strict condition that the company remained solvent."

Sarah Lin looked up, her gaze freezing Evelyn where she stood.

"Vance Enterprises is currently insolvent and under Chapter 7 liquidation. The lease is terminated. This estate is the sole, unencumbered property of Clara Sterling."

"No..." Chloe gasped, stumbling into the rotunda. "No, this is our house! My clothes are here! My jewelry! My car is in the driveway!"

"The white Porsche Cayenne?" Arthur Vance interjected quietly, checking a clipboard. "Leased under Vance Enterprises corporate marketing. The keys have already been seized by the marshal outside."

"You can't do this!" Evelyn shrieked, lunging toward Sarah Lin, but a sheriff’s deputy stepped smoothly between them, his hand resting calmly on his utility belt.

"Ma'am," the deputy said, "you have thirty minutes to collect your personal toiletries and one suitcase of essential clothing each. Any fine art, jewelry exceeding five hundred dollars in value, silverware, or vehicles are frozen pending inventory by the federal bankruptcy trustee. If you do not vacate the premises by 7:45 AM, you will be removed in handcuffs for criminal trespass."

"Clara did this!" Evelyn screamed, her face twisting into a grotesque mask of fury. "That little bitch! I gave her a home! I allowed her to sit at our table! She was a nobody! A gutter rat!"

"Ms. Sterling provided this estate for you for eight years," Arthur Vance said coldly, his voice cutting through her shrieking like ice. "She paid your staff. She paid your medical insurance. She paid your country club dues while you insulted her cooking and treated her like a servant in her own home."

Arthur stepped aside, gesturing toward the open front doors where two moving vans were already backing into the circular driveway.

"Thirty minutes, Mrs. Vance. The clock is running."

Forty-five minutes later, Evelyn Vance and her daughter stood at the foot of the long, winding driveway, the massive iron gates slamming shut behind them with a definitive, resonant *clack*.

Evelyn held a single scuffed leather carry-on bag. Chloe stood beside her in sweatpants, clutching a plastic shopping bag containing her makeup, shivering in the brisk morning air.

Their phones had no signal; the corporate family plan had been disconnected twenty minutes prior.

Down at the private gatehouse, the security guard—a man whose daughter’s college tuition had been quietly paid by my private foundation two years ago—didn't even look up as the two women began the three-mile walk down the winding mountain road toward the public bus stop.
