Chapter 11 - The Freezing of the Empire

"Vanessa, step back from that floorbeam right now," DA Vance commanded, her voice cutting through the room with the force of an iron gavel.

Vanessa didn't listen. Arrogance had blinded her so completely that she couldn't see the ground literally crumbling beneath her designer boots.

"You don't order me around, Vance!" Vanessa spat, her lips curling into a sneer. "My family funds your political campaigns! My father gave fifty thousand dollars to your reelection committee last November!"

"And that fifty thousand dollars was returned to your father's office by certified courier forty-five minutes ago, Mrs. Mitchell," DA Vance said with icy precision. "Along with a subpoena for his personal and corporate tax records for the past five years."

Arthur Vance, the high-priced PR fixer standing behind Vanessa, suddenly took two steps backward toward the stairs. His smooth, confident demeanor vanished. A seasoned operator knows when a ship is taking on water, and he could see the ocean pouring through the hull.

"Arthur, tell them!" Vanessa demanded, turning around, her voice rising in pitch. "Show them the settlement contract! Show them the non-disclosure agreement!"

"Mrs. Mitchell," Arthur Vance said quietly, clearing his throat and looking at the floor. "I advise you to exercise your right to remain silent immediately. My firm is... withdrawing its representation effective five minutes ago."

"What?" Vanessa shrieked. "You cowardly parasite! I paid you fifty thousand dollars this morning!"

"You paid with a check drawn on Aura Stone & Oak's corporate account, Vanessa," Robert Ellis spoke up, stepping forward beside me. "And that account was frozen by federal court order at precisely one-fifteen this afternoon."

Vanessa froze. Her manicured hands hovered in the air. "Frozen? What do you mean frozen? You can't freeze my sister's business account!"

"We didn't just freeze Aura Stone & Oak, Vanessa," DA Vance said, pulling a folded legal document from her breast pocket. "A federal magistrate signed emergency asset-freezing orders for every bank account, trust fund, and corporate entity associated with you, your sister Chloe, and your husband Daniel Mitchell. The charges against you have been upgraded to include racketeering, commercial bribery, and twelve counts of reckless endangerment."

The word *racketeering* hit Vanessa like a physical blow. The color drained from her cheeks, leaving her skin looking like wet chalk beneath her makeup.

Downstairs, the front doors banged open again.

Daniel stumbled into the room, gasping for breath, having finally slipped past the police barricade outside.

"Vanessa!" Daniel cried, rushing toward her. "The bank... the commercial bank just called my office. They've called the balloon payment on our commercial line of credit! They want two point four million dollars by five o'clock tomorrow or they're foreclosing on our company headquarters! Vanessa, what did you do with the collateral papers?"

Vanessa turned to her husband, her face twisting into an expression of raw, unadulterated hatred.

"What did I do?" she screamed at him. "I tried to build us an empire, you spineless little worm! You wanted to be a player in this city! You wanted the yacht club! You wanted people to bow when you walked into the steakhouse! You didn't care where the money came from as long as your friends thought you were a genius!"

"You lied to me!" Daniel screamed back, tears streaming down his face as he stood on the rotting timber. "You told me the Hamptons house was paid for by Chloe's design bonuses! You told me Harbor Light was fully funded! You used my company's credit to guarantee your sister's shell companies!"

"Because you were too stupid to do it yourself!" Vanessa shrieked, lunging at him with her hands clawed.

*CRACK.*

The sound was like a rifle shot inside the room.

The rotted floorbeam beneath Vanessa's feet gave way under the sudden, violent shifting of her weight.

With a terrifying screech of tearing timber, the floor collapsed.

Vanessa screamed as her right leg plunged straight through the ceiling of the second floor, trapping her up to her hip in splintered wood, exposed nails, and crumbling plaster.

"Daniel! Help me! It's giving way!" Vanessa wailed, clawing desperately at the buckling floorboards as chunks of plaster plummeted into the dark void of the floor below. "Daniel!"

May you like

Daniel stood three feet away, frozen in absolute terror, staring at his screaming wife as the timber groaned and splintered further around her.
