Chapter 6 - The Face of the Empress

The Vance Tower on 57th Street rose eighty floors into the Manhattan sky—a monolithic spire of black glass and burnished titanium.

When Andrew Weston arrived the next morning, he looked like a ghost of the man who had walked into the Bright Horizons ball four months ago. His suit was wrinkled, his tie slightly crooked, his face hollowed out by sleepless nights and financial devastation.

Two armed private security guards in charcoal suits met him at the private revolving doors. They didn't speak. They simply checked his identification, waved a wand over him, and escorted him into an express elevator that shot upward without stopping until floor seventy-five.

The elevator doors slid open into a boardroom that overlooked the entirety of Central Park.

The room was vast, lined with English oak and original oil paintings. Sitting on one side of a forty-foot mahogany table were six high-powered corporate attorneys, their laptops open, their expressions chiseled from stone.

At the head of the table sat Dominic Vance, immaculately tailored, tapping a gold fountain pen against a leather blotter.

And beside him sat Emma.

Andrew stopped dead in his tracks, his breath hitching in his throat.

She was unrecognizable.

The quiet, subdued girl who wore pale cardigans and kept her hair pulled back in a simple clip was gone.

In her place sat an empress.

Emma wore a bespoke, midnight-blue silk suit that accentuated her regal posture. Her rich chestnut hair fell in glossy, polished waves around her shoulders. A single strand of South Sea pearls gleamed against her throat, and on her lapel sat the platinum falcon brooch of the Vance dynasty.

She looked radiant. Powerful. Untouchable.

Her skin glowed with health, and her eyes—clear, calm, and utterly devoid of emotion—looked at him as if he were a speck of dust on the windowpane.

"Emma," Andrew choked out, taking a frantic step forward. "Emma, my God... look at you."

"Sit down, Mr. Weston," Dominic commanded, his voice slicing through the air like a guillotine.

Two security guards stepped forward, directing Andrew to the lone leather chair on the opposite side of the table.

Andrew sat, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the mahogany. "Emma... please. Look at me. We need to talk alone. Just five minutes! Please, tell these people to leave!"

Emma didn't blink. She turned to Harold Sterling, the lead attorney. "Proceed, Harold."

"Certainly, Miss Vance," the attorney said smoothly. He opened a massive red leather folder.

"Mr. Weston, we are here to finalize two matters today. First, the complete termination of your parental rights regarding the infant child, Clara Vance, born three months ago."

"My child?" Andrew’s voice cracked. "You had the baby? Emma, she's my daughter! I have rights! You can't just take my daughter!"

Emma leaned forward slightly, resting her chin on her laced fingers.

"You lost your rights the moment you paraded your mistress in front of the world while your pregnant wife stood twenty feet away," Emma said. Her voice was not angry. It was terrifyingly calm. It held the chill of a winter morning in the Arctic. "You told me that your child would have everything, Andrew. And she does. She has safety. She has honor. She has a family that understands loyalty. What she does not have, and will never have, is a cowardly, narcissistic parasite for a father."

"I made a mistake!" Andrew pleaded, tears finally spilling over his cheeks. He reached across the table, his fingers desperately clawing the air toward her. "The pressure of Wall Street... the gala... Lila meant nothing to me! She was just arm candy, Emma! You know how that world is! You know how much I loved you!"

"You didn't love me, Andrew," Emma replied softly, her blue eyes piercing directly into his soul. "You loved having a quiet servant who managed your home and fed your ego for free. You loved having a wife who stayed in the shadows so you could shine. But you forgot that shadows only exist when there is a mountain blocking the sun."

Dominic slid a single document across the table.

"Sign the termination of parental rights, Weston," Dominic said.

"And if I don't?" Andrew snarled, a desperate, cornered rat baring his teeth. "I'll fight you in court! I'll take this to the press! I'll tell the world the Vance family stole my child!"

Dominic let out a cold, humorless laugh.

"Harold, show him exhibit B."

Harold Sterling turned his laptop screen toward Andrew.

On the screen was a detailed forensic audit of Andrew’s personal offshore accounts, complete with bank wire confirmations, timestamped communications, and encrypted chat logs.

"Over the last eighteen months," Harold Sterling explained dispassionately, "you illegally funneled twelve million dollars of client retirement funds into private accounts registered in Belize to fund Miss Summers’ jewelry collection and your private sports car leases. That is securities fraud, wire fraud, and grand larceny. If you do not sign this document in the next sixty seconds, the files will be transmitted directly to the Southern District of New York. You will spend the next twenty-five years in a federal penitentiary."

Andrew stared at the screen. The numbers, the dates, the signatures—everything was laid out with absolute, undeniable precision.

They hadn't just investigated him. They had dissected him like an insect.

"You... you set me up," Andrew stammered, looking at Emma with horror.

"You set yourself up, Andrew," Emma whispered. "My grandfather always told me that greed creates its own noose. All my family did was pull the rope."

Andrew’s hand trembled so violently he could barely hold the pen the security guard placed before him.

He looked at Emma one last time. There was no pity in her eyes. No lingering warmth. No secret hope that he would change.

She was completely, totally free of him.

With a broken sob, Andrew pressed the pen to the paper and scribbled his signature across the line.

He surrendered his child. He surrendered his pride. He surrendered everything.
