Chapter 12 - The Web Unravels
By two o'clock that afternoon, Whispering Pines Road looked like the command post of a federal task force.
Yellow crime-scene tape cordoned off the rear crawlspace vent and the cellar entrance. Forensic investigators in white Tyvek suits carried out the severed shims, the high-tension nylon cord, and the electronic relay Derek had tossed into the weeds.
Derek had not stayed silent for long. The moment the handcuffs clicked around his wrists, he began singing like a canary in the back of Deputy Vance’s cruiser.
"He gave up everything," Frank Miller said, stepping out onto the porch with a fresh cup of coffee Clara had handed him. "Omar, Raymond Cross, the crooked notary—all of it. Derek was terrified of catching a twenty-year conspiracy charge. He admitted that Omar promised him forty thousand dollars from the developer's payoff to rig the bathroom subfloor."
Sasha sat on the porch swing, wrapped in a warm knitted blanket, watching the investigators work. Her face was pale, but the haunted, fragile look was gone, replaced by a deep, quiet gravity.
"Where is Omar?" Sasha asked.
"State troopers arrested him two hours ago at an extended-stay motel near the airport," Frank replied, pulling a pair of reading glasses from his pocket. "He was in the lobby with Raymond Cross, waiting for the fraudulent quitclaim documents to be delivered. When the troopers walked in, Omar tried to run through the kitchen. He tripped over a busboy’s cart and broke his collarbone."
A sharp, humorless chuckle escaped Clara’s lips from the doorway. "Poetic justice. Couldn't have happened to a nicer boy."
"What about Denise?" I asked.
Frank sighed, adjusting his glasses. "Denise wasn't named in the murder conspiracy, but she isn't walking away clean. It turns out she was cashing her deceased sister’s disability checks using a forged signature for the past four years. Omar was using that money to pay the lease on his luxury SUV. The Social Security Administration’s fraud division has already opened an investigation. At the very least, she’s looking at complete asset forfeiture and potential federal prison time."
The entire parasitic empire, built on lies, manipulation, and cruelty, had crumbled to dust in less than twenty-four hours.
"And the farm?" Sasha asked softly, looking out over the five acres of emerald grass, the apple trees heavy with young fruit, and the old red barn standing proud against the blue sky. "Can they... can they try to claim any part of it in the divorce?"
Frank pulled a document from his pocket and handed it to her.
"Under state law, a spouse convicted of or conspiratorially involved in a felony crime against the other spouse or the marital estate forfeits all rights to equitable distribution, alimony, or spousal support," Frank said with a satisfied grin. "The *Sasha Lynn Reynolds Trust* remains completely intact. The Vendor’s Lien protects every square foot. Omar couldn't touch a speck of dirt on this farm if his life depended on it."
Sasha looked down at the document. Her fingers traced the embossed seal of the county court.
She closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. It was the sound of a woman releasing eighteen months of terror, shame, and exhaustion.
"Mom," she said, looking up at me. "Can we burn that cot?"
May you like
I smiled. "I’ll get the matches."
