Chapter 7 - The Auction of Fools

Forty-eight hours later, Preston Vale made his desperate final move.

He arranged a clandestine midnight meeting at an upscale private lounge in the industrial district with representatives from Ironclad Dynamics. For Preston, this was the hail-mary pass: if he could sell Meridian's new automotive firmware specs for fifteen million dollars under the table, he could settle Apex Ridge’s margin call, avoid criminal indictment, and rebuild his empire.

He walked into the dimly lit VIP booth carrying an encrypted thumb drive, wearing a rumpled suit and carrying the frantic energy of a cornered animal.

Two executives from Ironclad were already seated, along with a man in an impeccably tailored three-piece suit who sat in the shadows at the corner of the booth.

“Do you have the payment escrow ready?” Preston asked breathlessly, sliding into the booth. “This is the complete source code for Meridian’s anti-theft network. It renders their entire product line obsolete if you deploy it first.”

“We’ve verified the file headers,” one of the Ironclad reps said nervously. “It looks authentic.”

“It *is* authentic!” Preston snapped. “I pulled it directly from Reed’s private servers through his wife. Now give me the transfer confirmation.”

“I’m afraid that won't be possible, Preston,” a voice spoke from the corner.

The man in the shadows leaned forward into the warm amber light.

It wasn't an Ironclad executive.

It was me.

Preston recoiled as if he had been struck with a live electrical wire. “Marcus?! What... what are you doing here?!”

He scrambled to stand up, but the two men beside him—who weren't competitors at all, but plainclothes investigators from the federal financial crimes task force—firmly pinned his arms to the booth.

“Mr. Preston Vale,” one of the agents said, pulling out a badge. “You are under arrest for attempted corporate espionage, interstate fraud, and illegal asset transference under federal injunction.”

Preston’s face drained to the color of ash. “No... no! This is a setup! Marcus, you set me up!”

“You set yourself up the moment you confused my patience for weakness, Preston,” I said, looking at him with zero anger—just the sterile detachment of an engineer viewing a broken gear. “You stole fake code designed to trace back to your personal IP address the moment you attempted to decrypt it. You threw my father’s keys into a pool. But you threw your entire life into a shredder.”

The agents hauled Preston to his feet, clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As they dragged him toward the door, Preston looked back, weeping openly, begging for a settlement, his polished veneer completely gone.

I didn't watch him leave. I simply picked up the encrypted drive from the table, dropped it into my pocket, and walked out into the cool night air.
