Chapter 7 - The Invitation

Friday evening arrived with the glittering promise of high-society ruin.
The Ashford North Harbor Investment Gala was hosted at the city's private yacht club, an exclusive enclave of old money, mahogany piers, and sparkling glass pavilions. Tonight was supposed to be Julian Ashford’s crowning achievement: the formal signing of the harbor development pact, which required the commercial clearance of Vance Global Maritime.
Julian Ashford stood near the grand champagne fountain, surrounded by city council members, investors, and his daughter Camille.
Camille looked pale beneath her thick layers of makeup. Her eyes darted constantly toward the entrance, terrified of shadows, jumping every time a server walked past with a tray.
"Stop acting like a frightened rabbit, Camille," Julian hissed through his teeth, adjusting his gold cufflinks. He was a broad, silver-haired man with the arrogant sneer of a man who had bought every victory of his life. "Miller was a fool. But Vance cannot touch our development deal. The mayor has already signed off on the state level. Vance has to cooperate or lose his maritime access."
"You don't understand, Father," Camille whispered, her knuckles white around her champagne flute. "He’s a monster. You didn't see the way he looked at me—"
"He is a businessman with guns," Julian snapped. "And tonight, he signs our harbor permits, or I pull the municipal bonds."
The double doors of the grand pavilion swung open.
The herald at the door announced the arrival, and the room went completely silent.
"Mr. Lucian Vance. Accompanied by Miss Delaney Hart."
A synchronized gasp swept through the three hundred guests.
Lucian walked in, looking devastatingly lethal in a custom midnight-blue velvet tuxedo, his broad shoulders cutting an imposing silhouette through the crowd. But it was not Lucian who stole the breath from the room.
It was Delaney.
She wore a breathtaking, backless gown of deep emerald silk that clung to her curves like running water, pooling at her feet in an ocean of shimmering fabric. Around her slender neck rested a flawless diamond-and-emerald collar from Lucian’s private family vault. Her head was held high, her spine unbending, her dark eyes sparkling with absolute, unshakable dignity.
She looked like a queen who had descended from a mountain to inspect her conquered lands.
Camille’s champagne glass shattered on the parquet floor, splashing wine across her satin shoes for the second time in a week.
"She..." Camille choked out, her voice strangled with pure horror. "That's... that's the waitress!"
Whispers exploded like wildfire through the room.
"Is that the girl from the Asheford ballroom?"
"Good God, look at her..."
"She’s with Vance..."
"The emerald necklace... that's the Vance family heirloom..."
Delaney walked beside Lucian, her hand resting gracefully on his forearm. She felt the eyes of every billionaire, every socialite, every coward who had watched her kneel on the stone floor five nights ago. But tonight, there was no sauce. There was no broken china. There was only the freezing terror radiating from the Ashford table.
Lucian guided her straight toward Julian and Camille Ashford. The crowd parted before them like the Red Sea before a hurricane.
"Julian," Lucian said, his voice cutting through the hushed murmur with effortless power.
Julian Ashford tried to puff his chest, but his eyes kept darting to Delaney, his jaw working uselessly. "Vance. What is the meaning of this? You bring a... a common catering servant to an executive signing?"
Lucian smiled. It was the coldest, most terrifying smile Delaney had ever seen.
"You seem confused, Julian," Lucian said smoothly. "Miss Hart is the newly appointed Vice-Chair of Vance Maritime Port Operations. As of four o'clock this afternoon, all municipal harbor permits, dredging authorizations, and commercial dock leases have been transferred into her corporate trust."
Julian Ashford went as white as a sheet. "What? That's... that's impossible!"
"Arthur," Lucian signaled.
Arthur Pendelton stepped forward from the crowd, presenting a leather-bound folio stamped by the State Maritime Commission.
"Miss Hart holds sole veto authority over the North Harbor project," Arthur announced, loud enough for every investor in the pavilion to hear. "And after reviewing the environmental, labor, and ethical standards of Ashford Enterprises, she has officially declined to approve the project."
A collective roar of panic erupted from the consortium of investors behind Julian.
"Julian! What does this mean?"
"Our twenty-million-dollar deposits!"
"The bank loans will default by midnight!"
Julian looked like he was having a stroke. He lunged forward, his face turning an apoplectic purple. "You can't do this! You little bitch! You were on your knees cleaning sauce off the floor three days ago! You don't have the authority to destroy me!"
Before Julian could take another step, Lucian stepped between them.
The speed of Lucian’s movement was terrifying. His hand shot out, his fingers locking around Julian Ashford’s throat with the force of a hydraulic press, lifting the older billionaire two inches off the floor before slamming him back against the ice sculpture behind him.
The sculpture shattered, raining freezing shards across the VIP lounge.

"Touch her," Lucian whispered, his face inches from Julian’s purple, gasping countenance, "and I will feed you to the harbor before the tide goes out."
