Chapter 7 - The Arrest and the Breaking Point

At 4:30 PM, I drove to Lily’s school to pick her up. Seeing her sweet, smiling face as she ran out of the kindergarten wing with her bright purple backpack cleared away all the poison of the last twenty-four hours.
"Hi Mommy!" Lily chirped, throwing her small arms around my legs. "Can we get ice cream today?"
"We can get whatever you want, sweet pea," I smiled, lifting her up and kissing her cheek. "How was your day?"
"It was great! We drew pictures of our families!" Lily pulled a piece of construction paper out of her folder.
I looked at the drawing. It showed a small house with two people inside: Lily and me. Floating above us was a giant yellow sun and a green tree.
There were no grandparents. No Aunt Brooke. No cousin Owen.
Just us.
"It's beautiful, Lily," I said, my eyes misting over.
"Is Grandfather still mad about the hamburger?" Lily asked innocently as I buckled her into her car seat.
I paused, looking at her soft, pure eyes. "Grandfather made some very bad choices, Lily. And when adults make bad choices, they have to take a time-out for a long, long time. But you don't ever have to worry about that again. Nobody is ever going to take anything away from you ever again."
Lily smiled, satisfied with the answer, and reached for her coloring book.
As we drove toward the ice cream parlor, my phone buzzed with an automated alert from the Columbus Police Department Victim Notification System, which I had registered for earlier that day.
NOTIFICATION: SUBJECT HAYES, ROBERT (AGE 62) HAS BEEN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY. BOOKING STATUS: IN PROCESSING. CHARGES: FELONY IDENTITY FRAUD (1 COUNT), ATTEMPTED GRAND LARCENY (1 COUNT).
It had happened.
My father had been arrested at his home on Elmwood Drive.
Ten minutes later, my mother found a way to text me from a neighbor's phone.
UNKNOWN NUMBER: THE POLICE CAME TO THE HOUSE IN FRONT OF ALL THE NEIGHBORS! THEY HANDCUFFED YOUR FATHER IN HIS DRIVEWAY! HE IS SIXTY-TWO YEARS OLD! BROOKE IS HAVING A HYSTERIC ATTACK! YOU HAVE DESTROYED THIS FAMILY! I HOPE YOU CAN LIVE WITH YOURSELF!
I looked at the message, took a screenshot for my legal records, and blocked the neighbor's number.
I didn't feel joy. I didn't feel triumph. But I didn't feel guilt, either.
What I felt was an overwhelming sense of justice. For two years, my father had walked around with his head held high, looking down on me, treating my child like an afterthought, while secretly leeching off my hard work to fuel his fragile ego and my sister’s greed. He had chosen to break the law. He had chosen to betray his daughter. The handcuffs were his own creation.
That evening, as Lily played with her Lego sets on the living room rug, a process server arrived at Brooke’s rented suburban home.
He served her with three distinct legal documents:
A temporary emergency restraining order requiring her to stay at least 500 feet away from me, my daughter, my home, and my place of employment.
A formal notice of civil litigation for defamation and tortious interference with employment, seeking $250,000 in damages.

A formal sub-poena from the District Attorney’s office, naming her as a person of interest in the grand larceny investigation regarding Miller Creative Ventures LLC.
Brooke’s world wasn't just cracking. It was collapsing into complete, total annihilation.
