Chapter 9 - The Final Verdict

The purge of the Vance syndicate took less than forty-eight hours.
With Donovan dead and Arthur crippled and awaiting federal indictment on wire fraud and kidnapping charges, their criminal empire collapsed like a house of dry kindling.
Roman did not unleash a wave of mindless violence; instead, guided by Sadi’s brilliant strategic mind, he executed a corporate and tactical decapitation that was celebrated by international trade authorities and underworld capos alike.
Every predatory debt collection agency owned by the Vance family was immediately dissolved.
Every fraudulent mortgage foreclosure they had executed over the past five years was formally vacated through emergency motions filed by Sadi in the appellate courts.
On Friday afternoon, Sadi stood in the private conference room of the Obsidian Tower, watching three shredding machines hum as they destroyed fifty thousand predatory medical debt accounts.
Roman entered quietly, holding a glass of vintage champagne.
He stood beside her, watching the paper fall like snow into the collection bins.
"You look tired," he said gently, wrapping his free arm around her waist and pulling her against his side.
Sadi rested her head against his shoulder, letting out a long, shuddering breath that she felt she had been holding for three years.
"For the first time in my life, Roman," she whispered, "I am tired from winning."
"You did more than win, Sadi," Roman said, turning her in his arms so that she was facing him. "You dismantled an empire of hyenas with a pen and a law book."
He set his glass on the table and reached into his inner pocket. He drew out a heavy, dark-blue velvet box.
Sadi’s breath caught in her throat. "Roman..."
"Open it," he murmured, his dark eyes softer than she had ever seen them.
She opened the box.
Inside lay not a diamond ring, but a pristine, gold-embossed certificate bearing the Great Seal of the State of New York.
It was an official, unconditional admission to the New York State Bar, signed by the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, accompanied by an honorary degree of Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School, awarded summa cum laude under an emergency academic restoration grant.
Beside the certificate lay the deed to a brownstone row house in Queens—the exact home her mother had loved, fully restored, fully paid for, and deeded unconditionally to Sadi and Maya Vance.
Tears sprang to Sadi’s eyes, spilling over her lashes. "How... how did you do this?"
"The Dean of Columbia was remarkably receptive to a twenty-million-dollar endowment for a medical-debt legal defense clinic named the *Elena Vance Memorial Foundation*," Roman said with a soft, affectionate smile. "And the state bar character and fitness committee decided that uncovering forty million dollars of interstate money laundering was more than sufficient practical experience."
Sadi threw her arms around his neck, burying her face against his chest, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated joy.
"Thank you," she sobbed. "Thank you, Roman..."
Roman held her tightly, his hand smoothing her hair, his heart beating strong and steady against hers.
"Do not thank me, Sadi," he whispered, his lips against her temple. "You gave me back my life. You gave me back my honor. Everything I have... everything this empire owns... is yours."
He pulled back slightly, his eyes holding hers with an intensity that took her breath away.
"I need a Chief General Counsel for Moretti Global Holdings," Roman said, his voice dropping into that deep, hypnotic cadence. "A partner who sits at my right hand. A woman who will rule this city beside me as my equal. As my wife."
From his pocket, he drew a second velvet box.
Inside was a flawless, five-carat emerald-cut diamond, flanked by two trillion-cut sapphires, glittering with the light of a thousand stars.
"Will you marry me, Sadi?"
Sadi looked at the ring, then looked up into the eyes of the man who had torn down the world to keep her safe.
"On one condition," she whispered, a brilliant, breathtaking smile breaking across her face.
Roman chuckled, his eyes dancing with amusement. "Name it."
"Section one, subsection A," she said, her arms wrapping around his neck. "You never read another contract without me."
Roman laughed—a pure, triumphant sound that echoed through the glass tower.
May you like
"Agreed," Roman whispered, pulling her in and kissing her with a passion that sealed their pact for all eternity.
