Chapter 9 - The Ghost in the Fire

Maribel’s eyes dilated with sheer panic. She lunged forward, not at Damian, but at the projector controls on the podium, trying to shut down the AV display that Marcus had already patched into.

Too late.

The massive four-panel video screens flanking the stage flickered. Instead of Apex Global’s promotional highlight reel, the screens displayed high-resolution scans of the Marion County site plans side-by-side with the 2017 Indianapolis warehouse blueprints.

Highlighted in pulsing red were the identical phrases: *Low-hazard exemption requested; secondary egress disabled for supply chain integrity.*

Directly underneath were the recovered WhatsApp audio messages Maribel had sent to her shell holding company in the Caymans:

*“The Vance kid is an idiot. He thinks I'm going to sleep with him. He’ll sign whatever I put in front of him, and when Marion County gets flagged, he’ll take the structural heat. We pocket the four million in retrofit savings and dump Apex by Q3.”*

Her own voice echoed through the ballroom speakers, crisp, cold, and undeniably monstrous.

The room erupted. Investors stood up in outrage. One of the state commissioners Maribel had been buttering up backed away from her as if she were carrying the plague.

"Turn it off!" Maribel shrieked, clawing at the podium cables. "Turn it off!"

I walked up the two steps to the stage. She stumbled backward, tripping over the hem of her sapphire gown, falling onto the polished stage floor just like she had fallen back in my living room.

"You took Logan’s life," I said, looking down at her, not with rage, but with the cold, absolute finality of justice. "You thought my brother was just a number on an insurance balance sheet. You thought my husband was just another tool to throw away."

"You have nothing!" she wept, her mascara running in black streaks down her face. "My father’s lawyers will tie this up in appellate court for ten years! You will never see a dime!"

"We don't want your money, Maribel," Marcus Vance said, stepping onto the stage and snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists. "We're not here for a civil claim. The Marion County Grand Jury unsealed an indictment forty minutes ago. Reckless endangerment, criminal conspiracy, and tampering with safety equipment. And because the fire marshal reopened the 2017 case based on new evidence of intentional malice..."

Marcus leaned down, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper that chilled the entire room:

"...the state of Indiana is charging you with involuntary manslaughter for Logan Miller."

May you like

Maribel went completely limp as the uniformed officers hauled her to her feet and marched her down the central aisle of the ballroom, past the flashbulbs of stunned journalists and the horrified stares of her corporate peers.
