Chapter 9 - The Wrath and the Vow
The dawn that broke over New Orleans was unlike any the city had seen in a decade.
By noon, news stations were broadcasting frantic updates. The Sterling Shipping Empire had collapsed into federal receivership following anonymous leaks of massive money laundering and fraud. Lorenzo Vale had vanished without a trace, his name scrubbed from every corporate registry across three states.
Inside the Black Pelican, the private penthouse floor had been completely sanitized.
Lena stood on the expansive terrace, wrapped in a soft cashmere robe Dante had given her, looking out over the winding Mississippi River. Below, the city moved like an army of ants, completely unaware of how close it had come to an all-out syndicate war the night before.
A pair of strong, warm arms slid around her waist from behind.
Lena leaned back into Dante’s solid chest, a peaceful sigh escaping her lips. He was walking with the aid of a hand-carved mahogany cane now—steady, strong, and recovering with terrifying speed. The doctors from Johns Hopkins he had flown in that morning had confirmed the miracle: his spine was structurally sound. With daily physical therapy, he would be walking unassisted within three months.
“You’re thinking too loud, little bird,” Dante murmured into her hair, kissing the curve of her shoulder.
“I’m thinking about yesterday,” Lena replied softly, turning in his embrace to face him. She rested her hands on the lapels of his black linen shirt. “It feels like a lifetime ago. Yesterday I was terrified of being fired. Today, my father called me crying because a specialist from Houston arrived at his clinic with a donor match for a kidney transplant.”
Dante’s eyes softened, a faint smirk touching his lips. “A remarkable coincidence, don't you think?”
Lena laughed through her tears, playfully swatting his chest. “You impossible man. You bought him a kidney?”
“I bought him the best medical team in North America,” Dante corrected, catching her hand and pressing his lips to her knuckles. “A man who raised a woman with your courage deserves to live a long, peaceful life. It is the least I could do for the family of my future wife.”
Lena’s heart stopped. She stared at him, her eyes wide. “Your... what?”
Dante didn't answer with words.
Slowly, deliberately, he leaned his cane against the terrace railing. With complete control, he lowered himself onto his right knee before her.
Lena gasped, pressing her hands to her mouth. “Dante, your knee—you shouldn't kneel—”
“I will kneel for only one person in this world,” Dante said, his voice thick with raw devotion. From his pocket, he pulled a velvet box. He flipped it open to reveal a breathtaking eight-carat emerald-cut diamond, set in platinum and surrounded by a halo of black diamonds—the signature of the Vale syndicate.
“Dante...” she breathed, tears blinding her vision.
“For seven years, I was surrounded by liars, leeches, and cowards,” Dante said, looking up at her with eyes that held the depth of the ocean. “They looked at my chair and saw weakness. They smiled to my face and poisoned my blood. But you... you walked into my darkness with nothing but a bundle of warm towels and an honest heart.”
He reached out, taking her trembling left hand into his.
“You held me up when my legs couldn't bear my own weight. You stood between me and a bullet without flinching. You are my light, Lena. You are my queen. Will you marry me?”
Lena didn't hesitate. She threw her arms around his neck, pulling him up into a desperate, passionate kiss.
“Yes,” she whispered against his lips, tasting the salt of her own happy tears. “A thousand times, yes.”

Dante stood, hauling her up into his arms, lifting her off her feet as his mouth claimed hers with a fierce, possessive hunger that set her entire soul ablaze. She was his anchor, his salvation, his forever.
