Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Inside the grand mansion on Mercer Island, silence had replaced the warmth that once filled the home.

Clare sat alone at the kitchen counter at 1:00 AM, wearing an old silk robe, surrounded by legal documents, financial balance sheets, and empty wine glasses.

On the counter beside her lay the white roses from four nights ago, their petals now brown, withered, and dead. Next to them sat Ethan's plain gold wedding ring.

Her phone rang. It was her corporate defense attorney, Marcus Sterling.

"Clare," Marcus’s voice sounded tired. "I just reviewed the severance and separation terms Ethan submitted through his counsel."

"What does he want, Marcus?" Clare asked, her voice raspy. "Half the house? Half my shares in Meridian?"

"He doesn't want half your shares, Clare," Marcus sighed. "He doesn't want any shares in Meridian Dynamics. In fact, he’s surrendered all his unvested executive options back to the company pool."

Clare blinked, confused. "He's giving up his stock options? They're worth millions!"

"He wants three specific things," Marcus explained. "First, full repayment of the four hundred thousand dollar loan he gave you seven years ago, plus interest. Second, full personal ownership of his five foundational patents registered during his first two years at the company. And third, immediate execution of the uncontested divorce decree."

Clare’s hand trembled around her glass. "The five foundational patents? Marcus... those patents cover the core security handshake for Sky Vault!"

"I know," Marcus said grimly. "If he pulls those patents, Meridian will have to pay Apex a licensing fee for every single enterprise deployment of Sky Vault, or rebuild the entire security kernel from scratch."

"He built those patents while he was married to me!" Clare yelled, her voice breaking. "He built them while working for my father's company!"

"He built them under a private individual inventor agreement signed by your father in 2019, Clare," Marcus corrected gently. "Your father made sure Ethan owned his intellectual property personally as a gift for saving the company's payroll. It’s legally airtight."

Clare closed her eyes as tears finally spilled over her lower lashes.

Her father had known. Her father had respected Ethan’s genius and his sacrifice. Her father had protected Ethan because he knew Ethan was the real pillar holding up the family legacy.

And Clare had thrown him away for a polished assistant and a glossy corporate presentation.

There was a quiet knock at the front door.

Clare wiped her tears hastily and walked to the foyer. She opened the door, hoping against hope that it was Ethan coming home to talk.

It wasn't Ethan.

It was Kyle Mercer, standing under the porch light holding a leather briefcase, looking anxious and disheveled.

"Clare..." Kyle began nervously. "I saw your light on. I tried calling your private mobile, but—"

"What are you doing here, Kyle?" Clare asked, her voice completely devoid of warmth.

"The board... they moved my desk to the basement filing room today," Kyle stammered, stepping toward her. "Clare, you can't let Richard Vance treat me like this! We were a team! We built the Sky Vault commercial vision together! You need to stand up to the board for me!"

Clare looked at Kyle. She looked at his expensive haircut, his desperate, needy eyes, his total lack of substance.

She remembered how he had whispered in her ear before the Rainier Club dinner, suggesting that leaving Ethan off the guest list would make the executive team look more sleek, more independent, more modern.

She remembered how she had nodded, agreeing with him because she wanted to feel like a powerful, solitary queen at the head of the table.

"Get off my porch, Kyle," Clare said, her voice dropping into a razor-cold whisper.

Kyle gasped, shocked. "Clare... what?"

"You didn't build anything," Clare said, tears of profound self-loathing streaming down her face. "You printed slides. You whispered toxic garbage in my ear because you wanted a piece of a legacy you had no right to touch. And I was stupid enough to listen to you."

"Clare, you can't blame me for Ethan leaving—"

May you like

"I don't blame you, Kyle," Clare interrupted, her eyes flashing with pure ice. "I blame myself for degrading my husband to lift up a nobody like you. Clear your desk by morning. You are fired."

She slammed the heavy oak door in his face, locking it with a sharp metallic click that echoed through the empty house.
